Road Tax

The issue is that the government is committed to reducing CO2 emissions, and adding the road tax to the price of fuel will not serve this purpose.

more like it is politically untenable to increase tax on fuel, which is already very high.

Hi, just taxed my CLK 320 petrol and had to pay £266.75 for six months.
When I last taxed the car six months ago the cost was £156.75, has this increase been due to the new tax system as I did not see any notification of the price difference.

Hi, the car was registered in September 2006, so the tax band is L, so you are quite right, just come as a bit of a shock as my previous 2005 CLK was in the lower tax band.

Tell me about it.. £500 a year to tax a car that averages <4000 miles in that time..

Cheers,

Gaz

Road tax should be scrapped stick it onto the price of fuel then those who do the most miles & use the most fuel pay more. I do less than 3000 miles a year but have to pay £225 for the privilege the man next door could be doing 50000 a year in the same tax band car and would be paying £225 that is hardly a fair system to all

Did you all not think to check the price of VED before buying your cars?

Yes I did
My point is, no matter how much I use my car I pay the same. I can do 50000 miles for £225 or no miles for £225

I've got no real issue with road tax other than I strongly believe that it should be ONE tax for all your cars i.e. it's the person taxed not the car and my thinking behind this is that I can only drive one car at once.

But you knew that...Invalid reason to whinge.

If someone said to you to cut your leg off, but it will hurt like Hell and leave you permanently disabled and you were then stupid enough to do it...don't then complain, you had prior knowledge to base a decision on.

So a car based Poll tax. You, Your Wife, maybe a Son or daughter, or two...all paying £225 p.a.

I suggest you don't tell the Chancellor about your fantastic idea. You wouldn't live long.

That'd still work out cheaper than what I'm paying now so yes!

Did you not know how much the cars would cost in VED before buying them?

Yes and it didn't affect my decision in purchasing them.

I just think it'd be a better idea to tax the person as opposed to the car.

How would that encourage people to buy less polluting cars?

The graduated VED is a masterpiece of design and has been very effective.

Your beloved Mrs T. introduced a Poll tax when people had exactly the same complaint about household rates and had to deal with riots, so obviously, it's not the way forward.

In addition, you knew in advance, so haven't got a justified argument.

Dont they already doing it through PAYE tax??

Truth be told, nothing is actually tax free in this life. Even some things branded as such, might be 'tax free' to us, but someone, somwhere paid VAT, or income tax, or some other levy before it could be extracted, manufactured, transported, etc.

Other than for very cheap old cars with very large engines, the cost of the VED is inconsequential compared to depreciation and other running costs (fuel, servicing, repairs, insurance, parking, London CC, etc etc...).

For this reason, I just buy the car I want regardless of the VED. :thumb:

However this is not a reason not to whinge about it later... :D

It won't, but then the current VED does not do this either.

Keeping in mind that CO2 is emission, not pollution.

Huh. The graduated VED has changed car buyers habits in a stroke. People now opt for low VED cars, even as company cars and pretty well all buyers of cars try to get the lowest VED band they can.

In what way? Who has it ever put off? I remember the big fuss about £1000 for the first years road tax, but the sales of the cars that qualify for that tax don't seem to be struggling.

Any gaseous emission is pollution, it depends on how harmful as to how it is categorised.

Irrespective of the warming effect it has on our atmosphere, try breathing Co2 and see how long you live for.

How have you jumped from road tax per person as opposed to per car to PAYE?

Truth be told, nothing is actually tax free in this life.
I've not said anything about tax free?
