Road tax

Yup. Some people can't get their head around the fact that my 5 litre V8 SL produces less emissions that most family hatchbacks (because it does a fraction of their annual mileage).

And you don't drive it like an angry man possessed! :)

New tax rules the DVLA make an extra £35 million!!!!!!!!!!!! Back door taxation.
Contact your MP, I have.

Does this include the estimated £10 million saved on not issuing the paper RFL discs or is that something else to be added to the total?

Prefer to Pay things as a one off. Also think it's cheaper if u pay 12 months rather than DD or 6 months

It is slightly cheaper if you buy 12 months, I generally SORN my summer/sports car from October/November until the weather is nice April/May.
Over the years I've found it better because quite often I use the car for 7 months of the year as I found if I bought 6 months and we had a nice November I'd be annoyed at myself for not using it whilst the weather was nice.

I prefer to scour the Internet for cars the same as mine, check they've got tax and MOT, then get some plates made up and just use them. Saved thousands over the years.

Brilliant!

I've even more absurd situation - sold the car yesterday, 1st of June, will not get vehicle tax refund for June, as apparently DVLA computers can only count whole months and can't do fractions.

In all seriousness, the most sensible thing for the DVLA to do is to start the new keepers tax liability from the beginning of the next month i.e. the end of the last full month that the old keeper paid for. It gives people a bit of breathing room and the DVLA doesn't 'lose' money.

This also works great for testing your limiter when going past speed cameras and as a getaway plate for bank jobs (Needed so you can pay your road tax on your AMG).

That is far too sensible. It will never be implemented.

What was wrong with the old system anyway?

What was the need to change it and cause all this hassle?

Saves government money, lets them make more money as well.

In fairness to the people complaining about this being a stealth tax increase. You have to remember that government debt is spiralling out of control and if they don't fix it we are screwed as a country. So if it wasn't a tax this way, they'd get the money off you in another way.

The only saving grace is all developed countries seem to be in the same boat, we've been living beyond our means. Even individuals do this, UK has the highest levels of personal debt in the world I believe last time I checked.

At least we'll be going out in style, a ball of fiery AMG death :bannana:

Apart from scrapping the tax disc surely the system hasn't changed. You always had to tax a car from the beginning of the month and could only redeem tax, if you sold the car, for full months. How often do you change a car anyway and lose a months tax. It seems a pity that with the new system they cant tax a car from any day of the month like insurance companies but the insurance companies also charge an admin fee for any change.
