Myself and my wife returned from our Italian road trip this morning and to be honest we would recommend to anyone that can do it, to do it! Very tired after 3500 miles in just under 3 weeks and my car has never been so dirty, but thats tomorrows job. So i'm now sorting through pics and will post the best bits for viewing. Now I have three weeks of Corrie to catch up on!

Just found out that Top Gear has been on while i was away!!! Priorities have now changed!!!!!!!!

Planning on heading down to Italy in August so would be keen to hear your route and any must sees!

Cheers,

Sounds like a great trip! I'd love to see some photos :thumb:

I go to on a Swiss Euro Trip once a year. This year, it was 1,850 miles in 5 days; last year 2,200 in 5 days
However, I'm yet to venture into Italy, although I'd certainly like to. What are the "must sees" in Northern Italy. Where abouts did you go? :)

OK Here we go. Depends how you are planning to stay, we went with all our camping gear so I can recommend campsites if thats any help, anyway We left Swansea about 8am on the 16th June and headed to Dover. Crossing was at 2pm so we had time in Dover to get some food before check in. Lovely smooth crossing and headed to Reims in France. Got to Reims about 9pm so searched for a hotel. First mistake was going in to Reims to find a hotel. Cheapest we could find was 50 euros and basic is doing it a favour, well you live and learn. Set off next morning towards Dijon and through Chambele and from there towards Turin. One thing to be very mindful of is the road tolls as they can be quite expensive. The autoroutes in France and the Autostrades in Italy are charged similarly but be prepared to shell out regularly. They do accept cards but I always had cash for these. This route takes you through Mont Blanc tunnel which is fantastic from any engineering acheivement but also very hot ( I read 42c on the outside temp gauge)over 30 kms long and cost you 35 euros. You know you are into Italy by the small Italian flag you pass and also the road quality deterioates significantly. The roads around Turin are bloody busy and you really need your wits about you (esp for us as we hit this about 5pm). From Turin we headed towards Savona which is on the coast close to Genova.

We stayed in a campsite right on the beach front from thursday to sunday ,which was nice but the weather forecast wasnt good for the coming week so we decided to head South. Headed on the autostrade past Genova and Pisa and down as far as Follonica where for a change of scenery we took the coast road down to Citavecchia where we rejoined the Strade and around the Rome ring road. There is a campsite in the hills above Rome in a place called Fianno Romana which was lovely. We stayed a week there because the weather was good, it had a lovely pool, loads to see, and close to Rome.

You could spend a fortnight in Rome and not see it all, its a beautiful city but on the day we went in it was about 38c which was a tad warm to walk through a city.

On the following sunday we headed back up towards Firenze to another camp in the Tuscanny hills which was truly stunning, over night stay and then through the Tuscan hills to Lucca.

Stayed there till thursday and decided to go to the South of France to Monaco.

Cant begin to describe Monaco as it is so georgous, found a campsite 5kms out of Monaco towards Nice which had the most beautiful views ever of the med.

Would have stayed here much longer but i've got a hospital appointment today as I'm waiting for spinal surgery so had to head back on Saturday lunchtime, over the french alps to Dijon, overnight in a hotel and on to Calais, getting back to Swansea 6:30 monday morning. Brilliant trip loads of lovely food, photos, wine and sites ,weather was fantastic and we cant wait to go again when funds allow tbh. If any wants to know anymore any more then we'll be glad to share.

If you could let me know the campsites, prices etc I'd be very interested.

I trust the car was faultless?
Absolutely spot on with no issues at all apart from the muck that it picked up on the way!

Though I think this has now been resolved

Cost wise, Campsite in Savona is called Camping Charlie, it is right on the sea front and although basic it was clean, level and ideal for the coast. 19 euro p/night with electric.
The site above Rome is the Pini Family park which was lovely, two pools, bar restaurant, wifi, coach trips arranged etc etc 26 euro p/night
The sister site to this one is below Firenze and is The NorcenniGirasole. This site was enormous, right in the Tuscan hills and is really superb especially if you have kids. Details of these two are on www.ecvanze.it
Lucca site is called Il Serchio, they do have a website but its not up to date(I just checked) 20 euro a night but no electric, but there is a georgous pool which isnt shown on their website and the site is very handy for Lucca, Pisa and Firenze.
The Monaco site is here Camping les Romarins Eze - Accueil, a little expensive at 44 euro a night, but come on ,its just outside Monaco and has to be the most beautiful place that we have visited in our lives. There was only the two of us so we could do as we pleased really but if you want to tour around the Med on the cheap then there is no other way to do it.

i bet you love your 208 now more than ever... sounds like a great trip.

Sounds like a fantastic trip - I too can't recommend driving trips to Europe enough and try to get at least 1-2 per year (although I've had my fair share already this year :D)

I've never been as far south as Rome though - earlier this year I made it down as far as Monaco and that seemed like I'd driven forever!

Darren - I do pretty much the same...you don't by any chance do it around Geneva Motorshow time do you?

It didnt seem to bad going there but when we left Saturday and drove back over the Alps it seemed never ending. Will say that it is beautiful though and we had the time to see it as we didnt have to back really until today. Still I went to the hospital today and am going in on friday to have a disc removed so at least we've had our trip before hand. (i currently walk on sticks but made sure they were out of camera shot)

Glad to hear you had an excellent trip, and good luck for the op on Friday. The memories of a great road trip will be with you while you recuperate and should spur you on to plan the next one for once you're up and about again :thumb:

All the best for Friday mate! :thumb:

Thanks a lot, though i know what to expect this time as i had a disc removed 7 years ago and can still remember how good i felt after that op so fingers crossed this will be the same. Same neurosurgeon as before so i'm in with a chance.

Edit 1.......... I put the web address wrong for the two sites in Italy ....it should have been www.evacanze.it ,apologies to all who came up blank.

Edit 2..........In the pic of the Tuscan hills with my wife leaning on the back of the car you can see in the backround an estate. Apparently this is the residence of Sting who is often seen in the villages in the area.
