A 6-week road tour of Scotland where I buy a car for the trip. What car?

One slight drawback, the OP wants his £2.5k back at the end of the trip!
I wonder how £2.5k / 6 weeks compares to hiring a car (new, serviced & reliable) and and then taking whatever you can sell the car for (or even dumping it).

This is beginng to feel like the op expecting us to solve his trip budget issues. :D

How will it go with the V5 , if the OP doesn`t have a UK address ?

Where does the new V5 get sent to and , when selling , any purchaser may want to purchase the vehicle from the location on the V5 , i know i would regardless of the price ?

A £5k Boxster could be a great experience, or end in tears. To be fair even it went pop you’d get half your money back anyway, likelihood would be okay unless you bought an absolute lemon. Any old car at £2.5-5k without warranty could go wrong of course.

You’d have plenty of fun and make some great memories, take a bit of a gamble

I noticed that from the first post but was unsure if the adventure was starting and ending from their address.

At least the DVLA will have somewhere to send all the speeding / parking penalties , while the OP is back home in NZ.

To be fair not much difference to renting a vehicle in that respect. Registered keeper (or address if name matched even) wouldn’t be driving either way :)

Don't forget you'll have to tax it too, which means having proof of insurance, a current MOT and V5, or at least the transfer of ownership slip.

Correction. I am OK with losing what I would pay Hertz. I've done sooo many European and UK holidays in whatever bland car they have on the line, so the idea was to make an adventure of it. I set a £2.5 budget because someone asked, but another reply suggested £5k which is doable.

At this point the most appealing cars are remarkably diverse:
  • Smart Roadster, not the Brabus - and with this I would look for one I could send back to NZ and pass their extreme VIN inspection, which means a pampered one for a premium price. I've got a small spare 3.6m space in the city garage that is unoccupied.
  • Freelander 2 with a breakdown and 6 month repair warranty - which means paying a bit more to a reputable dealer
  • Jaguar - anything from the Ford era. I have an XJ6 which is an amazing car but may be a wee bit wide for Scottish roads and I used to have an S-type with the active suspension that took curves like a dream. All are ULEZ which may help on a resale
  • R171 SLK is still in the running
  • And then today the MGTF popped up. Last MG I owned was an MGB that had the suspension of a tractor. Anyone know anything about them?
  • And totally off the wall - Citroen C6
Address in Kensington. Won't consider anything without a MOT beyond my tenure.

Whilst I offered up a Saab 9-3 convertible (and still would), a deal on a modern / hire car would avoid any concerns about breakdowns, ropey tyres, leaks, creaks and faults, tax and insurance.....

If you are, however, after a car with a little warranty, some waft ability and even uniqueness, I will put this up to be shot down
Coupe
Having driven that model a few years ago, they are a nice waft with a little bit of grunt....
You'd get some of your money back
Flame on!

Nowt wrong with your Peugeot 407 coupe on £2,300. I wouldn't own one but it's something different.

(To me a Citroen C6 is too rare a beast to try to own and maintain)

But shouldn't we be nudging him towards a nice SLK200 ?

It has style,
An MB with proven pedigree,
ample space for most tourists,
in fact I could be tempted for that handy tool box in the back.

For a man from down under you might like something that was known for transporting folk to down under.

Might be a bit over budget though.

Now you're talking. Plenty of space for the luggage and discreet storage drawer for those things you don't want everyone to see.
