A friend has bought a R107 280sl. He's asked me to bring it back from Ilfracombe to Manchester so should be an interesting day this Saturday with 6.5 hrs on the train and a bus ride just to get there.

I'll get some pics up when I get back.

Roadtrips in newly bought old cars make me nervous.

Illfracombe is middle of nowheresville. Snakey A road to get to the M5.

That's why I said it should be interesting. Car has a years mot and good service history but I'll be checking everything before and during the trip. Got 24hrs comp insurance with breakdown for £29 :D

Better to go to Barnstaple and down to the M5 than that route...

If you're travelling back when it's liable to be dark, check the headlights work.

I picked a van up from Manchester a while ago and as I was driving it back along the M62 it got dark, lo and behold BOTH headlights weren't working so I had to Sellotape a torch to the front of the van so I could see where I was going.

You know those times when something breaks or goes wrong and in typical man fashion you look about for something/anything to sort the problem?

This was one of those moments.

When i bought my wifes 380SL some months ago, I travelled from Stoke on Trent to Aberdeen, approx 370 miles. The wife dropped me off at Manchester airport, then it was a straight forward hours flight to Aberdeen. The seller collected me from the airport, then once the deal was done on the car, i had a very pleasant (almost) 7 hour drive home.
It should really of only taken about 5.5 hours but torrential rain meant to journey back was tediously slow. The car ( despite having clocked 300,000 miles with comprehensive history) drove like an absolute dream.

Have a safe, trouble free journey on saturday.:thumb:

If I remember the route there by public transport, from Exeter (Central or St Davids) get the train to Barnstaple, then the 301 which stops near the bus station (leave train station, get bus to bus station (or walk over bridge and follow signs/see where the buses turn in), so you're in the bus station with the main building on your right. Walk, turn right after it into main road, turn left, and you'll see a stop opposite a derelict building. There are one or two routes from inside the bus station but those don't exactly go right into the centre, the 301 does.

Plan the return journey with Google Maps - I found out recently you can drag the recommended route on the map so you use certain roads or routes

I love these mini adventures. Might go across to minehead then down to Taunton just for the hell of it

Does anyone else want a mini adventure between now and Christmas? I need to recover my w201 from Croatia and wouldn't mind a co-driver. Thinking of flying out one Friday evening and driving back sat, and home on sunday... It is rather a long way.

Count me in as long as you're paying the flights etc :thumb:

haha, been there done that several times with new cars. in fact i end up buying most my cars hundreds of miles away and driving them back.

the latest one was a W124 E300D estate that I bought unseen on ebay. Drove it the 300 miles back (last weekend) - was fine.

as alsready suggested, check the obvious stuff like fluid levels, make sure you have breakdown cover just incase. also make sure you have the tools in the car to change the wheel and the spare is good enough to use.

make sure the radio works. mine didnt but it did have a tape player in it. havnt used tapes for years but borrowed a few from my parents to help with some music on the journey.

enjoy, its fun. and safe journey.

with a 107 SL i'd also 2nd that you need to make sure that the headlamps are good - this model often has very poor lighting due to the reflective panels inside the light degrading.

Definitely drop down to the A361 rather than using the north coast road. You don't want to be climbing Countisbury Hill and descending Porlock Hill in an unknown old car!

Of course, there's the "wuss's diversion" down Porlock, but you can't use that unless you have a caravan or a paper bag over your head.

Don't forget your AA card ;)

Well she made it in rather superb fashion too, never missed a beat :bannana::bannana:
