roof box vs trailer

Our Vito is the ultimate 'estate' for carrying kids & dogs :D

That would be the next step for me...In the meantime, here is a proof of just how much you can cram in a S124!!

Hello

Have to agree as much as I kid myself I could keep the 330 convertible its no good as a family car. 2 wide doors and the rear seats are like buckets.

Nope roll on sensible wagon, I cannot belive how much I've used the ML already to cart doors, railings, skirting, wood, etc etc really handy car.

I would maybe swap for a C32 Estate at some point (maybe a tad small) or the E class estate.

Spotted this at the cheshire show last week, lots of room in this and given the Brabus kit / command / spec sounded quite good at £28K plus vat (ooh and a nice V6 3.0VCdi to boot)

The Vito Sport-X is nice apart from the chrome side-bars (Sport has them too). Mechanically it's a standard Vito 120 ... IMO M-B should have lowered the suspension slightly (as VW do with their Transporter Sportline).

Better not mention the 5th gear report on the VW and Merc X...

But I thought it looked a lot of car for the money especially as they had a C220cdi estate for sale (new shape) for £34500 !

needs parking sensors I guess thats an option? I have the brochure somewhere.

:)

Yes Parktronic is a cost option. You have to choose between that or a passenger airbag though (because both the front and rear LED displays go on the dash)!

Speaking with a couple of tow bar people, it appears that I can only get a Westfalia removable tow bar and it is incompatible with sports suspension due to the low ground clearance... not going to stick a conventional hitch on my CE so that's that then..

Luckily we are still fairly low maintenance on the camping front having moved up from a titchy 2 man tent which we have taken everywhere in the last 10 years (5 years on a bike) - I reckon I could limit our additional bits to the boot and a roof box, unless number 2 arrives which according to Mrs B will not be for a couple of years (whatever my view :)).

I haven't been able to find one for the C43 either - something to do with the AMG rear bumper I think. I was toying with the idea so I could have a tow-bar mounted bike rack and/or a roof box depending on what I was up to

Well spotted - you have no say on this matter. Although, when summoned, your presence will be required.

Good luck with the roof box. The CE looks very cool in a campsite. Most people who go on family camping trips seem to have resorted to wood-burning people carrier-type vehicles. All very sensible shoes.

Don't give up the faith. Four years ago I was leaving the Big Chill and was being followed by a couple in a silver 993 with a tent shoved in the back. It was a great look.

I've gone down the estate route - but the sensible format is more thna offset by the ridiculous engine.

:D The best vehicle we had was a motor caravan. We could stop on the journey home, my wife could lay the baby on the table and comfortably change the nappy without any stress or being a contortionist.

As an aside I wonder how many parents still use conventional terry towel type nappies on their babies? ;)

I have a brother and two sisters, and in the days before MPVs a camper van was the only option for transporting a family of 6 plus luggage. We had several VWs and a Fiat ... with the table in the back and not a seatbelt in sight they would be seen as deathtraps nowadays?

We use disposable nappies on baby BTB I'm afraid ... he gets changed on the pull-out deck at the back of the Vito, with all the dogs watching :D

I had one of these trailers for nearly 10 years:-

http://www.conwayproducts.com/cgi-bin/range.pl?Category=Carrier Trailer

Not a cheapy that you find in Halfrauds but I used to tow it daily behind my Range Rover. It was well built and durable and kept pretty dry even in the most severe rain.

Important things with trailers....avoid wheels under 12" and get something with some form of suspension on it. The jockey wheel is not essential, but very helpful, and it's really a must that it has a drop down tailgate, it makes the unit very versatile.

Buy the biggest practical trailer for you, the linked one above is 5' x 3' and you can get quite a lot in that. I would be tempted to buy a fibre glass lid for it though rather than the fabric cover.

IIRC I read somewhere that AMGs aren't usually type approved for towing.

Exception being the ML55 - seen several of those with towbars.

Yup the cost of Type Approval made most manufacturers a bit selective about which specific models they submitted.

Just to be clear, all cars from 98/S plate (1/8/98) onwards must use a Type Approved towbar.

Yep,

I had a 2001 BMW Z3 and yes I wanted a towbar.... Nope

Even though there was a towbar for the car it was only type appoved up to 1988. The cost of putting it through the test against the amount they sell (very few I should imagine on a Z3) is not worth it.

Fitters would not fit it. Even if they did I bet my insurance would be void.

That might be the reason then. I guess the typical user profile for a (new) AMG user didn't warrent the effort/cost.

I certainly haven't experienced a yearning to hitch up a trailer in either of mine....

My RS4 and RS6-owning mates haven't either....

Correct, and you could have been prosecuted just for having it on the car (even if you never towed anything with it)!

That is correct. No AMG model to my knowledge has been homologated to tow a trailer, whether built before or after 1998.

You should be able to find an Oris towbar for your coupé easily enough. These are perfectly compatible with the sport chassis.

A demountable one?
