Car
52 w21o 320 cdi
hi all just thought id ask if anyone has suffered a similar problem to the one i seem to have at the moment.Swmbo rang me on sunday to let me know that she had a puncture front n/s on the w210 320 cdi estate avantgarde and could i come and change it for her ! Of course i know what side my bread is buttered on so was with her as soon as possible ;) .When i took the wheel off , rather than seeing a nail or such like i found a groove right round the inner edge of the tyre that had gone through completely. The car has 235 45 17`s .Today i got a new tyre put on the wheel and when i put it back on the car it looks like the top ball joint is the culprit ! Can anybody shed any light on why this may be? I know the car does sit quite low but figured this was normal for the avantgarde model and tbh it doesnt look any lower than others .Any ideas ?

The front springs will be either sagged or broken and the camber out as a result, which wears the inside of the tyre.
In addition the tyres are too wide for the car and the wheel offset may be wrong.
What wheels are they?

Hi Dieselman and thanks for your reply , my wheels are alhena 17x7.5 `s The tyre wasnt so much as worn around the inner edge , it was just grooved where i assume the top balljoint was making contact with it but i will obviously be checking springs etc at the weekend . Many thanks again john

Hi Everyone , just a quick question about part numbers ! following my recent post about the grooved tyre problem i have indeed found that one of my springs is broken .I have just been on euro car parts and ordered drop links but they do not list front springs for avantgarde models just classic/elegance.Just wondered if anyone can access or tell me how/where to get them (part numbers) or where to get the correct springs from. Many thanks in advance . John

Get the correct ones from the dealers. Surprisingly, they are not expensive. The springs have colour codes on them. But if you can't see them then the dealer can order them with your VIN.

I had a front offside spring break a while ago on my W211 Av Saloon. The replacement was about £45 from main dealer, replaced both of course. I was told that they actually fail, ie the coil collapses and they lose their height when the car is parked rather that moving (thank goodness) and that it's very common, so dealers have stock. Couldn't miss it, the tyre was way under the wheel arch and steering was severely limited. Sad image of my car being loaded onto a breakdown truck. Not a DIY job (at least for me) but done quickly by a local specialist.
Parts required were a spring (W2113210404) and a spacer (W2112113230052), about £6. I note you have a W210S though, probably different parts.
Also had two very bowed springs on a W214, took the opportunity when replacing to lower all round a little. Once again parts were inexpensive.

Hi Effbee, unlike your car mine isn`t that noticeable as the spring is only broken at the bottom so i dont have a vast drop in ride height.I have only lost a 3inch piece of spring which probably hasn`t affected ride height but may have affected geometry allowing tyre/ball joint contact on full lock .I will get the springs on monday and do them myself as im lucky/unlucky enough to be able to do so ! But many thanks for you input:thumb:

They are easy to do if you have the correct Klann type spring compressor.

Hi renaul12ts, is it crucial that Klann spring compressors are used ? I just have generic type ones ! Wow ive just watched a video on google the klann ones look good , way out of my price range though for a one off use
