'Kool-Lights' modification by Koolvin.

This mod was done for the W202 C class Mercedes but can be done to nearly any car you wish What is it? Basically when you

have 2 bulbs in your headlights, 1 is a normal bulb lamp for dim. The other is the main beam and flash. What I intended to

do was have the indicators come on with the headlights when you put your lights on dim. Cruise lights baby!
This mod took very little time to complete as it was well thought out. I spent a day in testing and the next day it took me

a few hours to execute.

Here is a indicator wired up with a bulb on my test bench.

The indicator basically has a hole drilled which is for the bulb.

Here is the bulb used for Dim it's the same as the one in the headlight.

Tools needed,

Bullet connectors for joining...

Tap connectors used as I didnt want to cut any wiring in my car

Crimp tool for the bullet connectors.

7.JPG

Membrane grommits used for blanking holes or passing wire.

8.JPG

I wired up two female sockets to some wire.....

9.JPG

Quite an easy process really...

10.JPG

Here are the Male 'Bullets' I also put tape over the ends just to prevent water going in....

11.JPG

Hehe, not much wiring is involved.....

12.JPG

The indicator is removed by pussing the leaver behind it from under the bonnet

13.JPG

Here is the Dim light taken out of the Headlight housing... I will be wiring up the indicator bulbs to this in parralel.

14.JPG

The headlights have a cover behind them which seals them from outside and have a rubber seal to prevent water going in

them... My wiring up the indicators to the headlights meant I had to drill this or not use the protective back cover. I

wanted to be proffesional and decided to drill the cover. The other arrow points to the grommit which is used...

15.JPG

Yup all drilled 4.5mm hole...

16.JPG

But the grommit in the hole and pirce the membrane so That you can pull wires through it!

17.JPG

Voilla! air tight and water tight seal! (also protects the wires scraping against the drilled cover)

18.JPG

The Blue connector is the wire tap connector put that over one wire to the lamp and then put the light from the cover and

close with a pair of pliers... do this for both sides.

19.JPG

The cover is back on the light now... and wires are allowed to pass see arrow!

20.JPG

Connect the light to bullets just to see and make sure it works.

21.JPG

Next, Drill the Indicators for the Lamp housing... Note the cloth - this is to prevent the lens getting scratched.

22.JPG

Drill it!!!!

23.JPG

Alot of crap goes into the light and needs to be taken out... Put a vacum cleaner on one end and p[ut themb over the drilled

hole to suck out any bits left after drilling.

24.JPG

Assemble and enjoy!!!!

25.JPG

Yes they still flash

You definately have too much time on your hands! My question is - are they legal ?

thats one nice mod, although illegal. looks great, would be good as parking lights with a different switch and then would be legal too right?

If you connect the return wire from the indicator repeator to the sidelight live, then the indicator repeator will come on with the sidelights too.
With the sidelights off, the repeater will flash as normal - with the sidelights on, the repeater will flash out of phase with the indicators.
Looks cool, and is just as questionable on the legality front. :)

Very nice mod! Made me laugh too when u say you don't wanna cut any wires in your car, yet seem quite happy to take a black n decker and cut holes all over it! :P

I quite like US style day running lights (although many US owners don't!) with the front corner indicators constantly lit on half power.

I did a similar mod to my old Honda Civic. Although to get the US look I replaced the parking light bulbs with orange indicator bulbs (no one else at the time had coloured indicators for sale so I got the coloured side wedge type bulbs from my local Merc dealer at the time). It looked great at the time, didn't get any hassle with them although it did make my car look like an import (just at the time everyone started importing MX5's & Civics from Japan ;-( ).

As for the legality - I think that they actually may be legal, I read in Autocar recently I think that Day running lights (DRL) may become legal. Have a look at the current Discovery & the last of the old model discovery & the current BMW 5 Series, they have the front amber indicators constantly part lit.

Daytime running lights are perfectly legal, check out basically any volvo ;) .

I think it's the fact that the indicator housing has another bulb in it which washes out the indicator lamp, you can't see the indicator very well.
