Rusty Nuts!

I'm due for a new tyre or two and would like to replace my wheel nuts, the heads of which have rusted.

I've seen them for sale on Fleabay but I can also see there are different types so would appreciate a word from the wise. I have the standard 16" 5 hole alloys on my 2001 W210 E320 CDi. I can't find a product number for the bolts. Can anyone help?

Many thanks.

They are 12mm more than likely 28mm long.

Rather than replace all of the time I sand paper the heads up and spray them with Hamerite Silver, sure it takes the edge off when re fitting but you cant see that. with the car standing you can do 2 at a time from all of the wheels

Brilliant! I hadn't thought of just re-spraying them (doh). Something you can do a bit at a time, of course.

Thanks very much.

I was given some new ones at a meet, now my car never goes out in the rain and they have gone rusty just through washing the car.

Yes you can do 8 at once a piece of somthing with holes in it is useful to pop them in when doing it

Rusty wheel bolts get discussed fairly regularly, there's a member here called "Murray Systems" who sells better ones (quoted as over 12 times the corrosion resistance of the standard M-B zinc plated bolts):

I will try those if my Vito ones go bad. The ones on my SL are fine, but that's a 'fair weather car' which is kept garaged and not exposed to road salt etc.

Just noticed this thread after having my nuts replaced under warranty, you can't beat a fresh set of nuts:eek: .

I've been using Meguiars Hot Rims wheel cleaner, and followed the instructions carefully i.e. not left the chemical on for longer than 30 secs. The wheels look great but the nuts including locking nuts went rusty. I asked the dealer to look when in for a service and got a full replacement all round:bannana: .

What can I do to prevent reoccurance, or is it inevitable?

P.S. I say the wheels look great, apart from one. The lacquer is coming off a wheel that was refurbished prior to my ownership.

Just spraying the wheel bolts with Hamerite works wonders

You can do up to 8 at a time by having something to hold them while they dry a piece of Dexion or wood with holes is perfect
