Whilst I was away with work for a few days, the front springs went on my S211. Other half thought something was seriously wrong, so she called into the only local garage open on a Sunday (ie, Kwik Fit). There she was told that it would be "extremely dangerous" to drive the car, and new springs had to be fitted there and then.

Was not amused to find a bill for £315 on my return. From a quick search of the other threads, seems they totally fleeced us:mad:

Springs are likely to have been around £100 for a pair. Depends how long it took them to fit them I guess. I did my own although Mr Walker down at 124works :thumb:let me use his spring compressor to fit the new springs into the struts. If I'd had my own compressor to hand it would probably have taken me a couple of hours, maybe 3. An experienced garage would do it in less time.

EDIT 124 works is now TMS Ltd.

Kwik Fit are pricey, depending where you go I would have thought £200 tops fitted.

Again I have done my own in the past on several cars (none MB) and with the spring compressor they are fairly easy - especially if you have an impact gun as well.

holly , thats expensive.

It sounds a tad on the high side (you could have a look online to get an idea of what the springs would cost you) however if they were as bad as you thought, atleast they were changed, and the car made safe for your wife there and then.

Truth is any garage will be more than DIY, high street and dealer will always be more than an indi.

High street garages get their business through branding, and making customers (especially women) feel comfortable with parting with their cash to an 'expert'

Glad its safe and sorted atleast!
