Salesmen’s tricks and how to avoid them

I always ask (if trading in) "Cost to swap". If he tries to add extras after that, I walk. Also look carefully at service requirements - when I bought my S204 it was close to the end of their sales quarter, the car was about 3 months from needing a B service with fuel, air filters and brake fluid change, I insisted the car was B serviced before I would buy. OK, it cost me a month's road fund (bought on 29th March) but I saved hundreds on the B service!

Most of it is either criminally fraudulent or borderline criminal.

While there are certainly some criminals out there, the majority of issues when buying a car usually stem from salespeople's 'tricks' which are not illegal as such.

It is probably more useful to be armed with knowledge about what the typical salesperson might try, then weary about eBay scams.

Additionally, some traders are perfectly honsest people.... I have met a few myself.
