My recently acquired E320 cdi 2005, does not take the full postcode and on a drive today there were three places where the car thought I was off road. Is updating the Sat nav as simple as obtaining a more up to date dvd or is the upgrade done via the head unit?

Hi, I have a 2005 CLS so I'm guessing similar command system. In order to install a newer sat nav disc you will need to update the firmware first. However I have a 2017/2018 disc and this doesn't ask for full postcode either.

I have a feeling you night have early stages of your GPS failing as my system was doing similar to yours.

Cheers

Welcome to the crappy world of MB satnav on their cars. If you want chapter and verse on the system in your car, have your VIN to hand and give a call to comand.co.uk, they will tell you how to discover exactly what you have installed, what you can do with it and what it will cost. Just for info, I have a mid 2008 S204 with Comand NTG4, it only accepts 5 digit postcode entry (German postcodes are 5 digits!!) and, due to the small nav partition on the Comand HDD, will only take updates to 2014-15. If I want later updates I have to "modify" the HDD at a healthy 3 figure cost or replace the Comand head unit, again at a healthy 3 figure cost including installation. If I want to upgrade to a later Comand system that allows 7 digit postcode entry - 3 figures becomes 4 (estimate £2k) and involve a replacement dashboard for the permanently visible screen instead of the pop-up, as well as higher update costs.

If it's critical, I take the Tomtom Go 6000 I have for my 968 - about £220 4 years ago, free lifetime map updates, 7 digit postcode entry - and speed camers! MB are not alone at being crap about their built in satnav - as a PCGB member I see similar comments on their website, and have heard the same about Audi, BMW and others.

My 2005 CLK has a NTG2 version COMAND. I replaced the original 2004/05 DVD with a 2013/34 version and it updated the maps ok and in addition gave me ETA on the navigation screen. It will still only be as up to date as the map database of course, so soon afterwards I found I was occasionally "offroad" ie on roads that were not known to the system. For the time it takes to get back on track I don't find this a major inconvenience. Particularly if the map is set to "North up" and I know roughly what direction I'm heading in...

Re the 5 digit postcode entry this cannot be upgraded to 7 digit on my version of COMAND. Again I don't find it a huge problem as the 5 digit postcode takes me to a screen where I can input the road or street name of my destination.

None of the above is to argue that this is as good as a modern system, and no car manufacturer system or indeed portable satnav is as good as the best smartphone systems, in terms both of mapping and traffic avoidance.

Ditto. - My CLK went from the V7 disc to V14 (which I think was 2016/2017) in one go without any complaints.
I agree that the post code thing is annoying, and the unit does have some quirks about what roads it likes to take... but I like the integrated display, so as above; if it's critical I use Google maps on my phone.

Hi I have an E 320 2005 cdi which I have owned from new.I purchased a 2016/2017 sat nav disc from Command on line, followed the installation instructions and that was it, very simple I think from memory I had to switch the system off,and lock the car from outside for 2 minutes and everything was installed, it has worked fine since. Regarding the offroad message this occurs when you are on a new or recently developed area which the system does`nt know but this soon sorts itself out when you keep moving. I found the Command on line company very helpful when I was ordering as I rang to confirm I had the right disc etc.Mine will not take the full postcode either but this is no problem as it gets to the right road just a short distant from your destination.
