Hi guys, I have a 2004 E270 CDI, I seem to be getting some noise from the SBC pump when I pump the brake a few times, its quite loud...
Pointers?

Either the bushes it sits on are missing/split/worn out or the pump is on the way out.

If it's just loud but short there have been software updates to make them quieter. They area a bit odd if you're not used to them.

Is it something you think Mercedes will do under good will? I have had this done previously on the E220 CDI and they changed the piping which stopped it.

Update:
I have actually just read up on this on the US forums, and the US get a 10 year warranty on the SBC pump, they generally have a life of 350,000 pedal presses before something goes wrong. I wonder if MB UK will offer something similar.

I have heard that MB are replacing the pumps under good will .

Lets hope so Shorty!

They replace mine in the SL a few months ago as it was coming up with an error on the dash. Despite it being a 2003 car they still did it for free....

good luck, you don't get if you don't ask :D

I have this problem as well on my e220 cdi(53 plate). So I can just take this to any benz dealership and ask for a goodwill replacement pump?? is that how it works?
:dk:

book it in.. they may charge for diagnosis.. then they will put a claim into MB and as long as the cars under 8 years old, 99% chance it will be approved by MB.
We have had loads done now at just £54 a go.

I am a little curious.

When I bought my E320 just over 18 months ago, I posted a question about the noise which came from the SBC pump.

The consensus then was that it was nothing to worry about. I have lived with it ever since.

Are we now saying that it needs (needed) replacement? Seems to me to be quite a shift of opinion to me...

I will call Mercedes of Leicester and see how it goes and update you guys tomorrow.

the pump is designed to last for 350000 pedal presses , it will the show an error message ,

All 211 eclass make some noise from sbc pump may be worth letting someone listen to find out if yours is more than normal.

ANDYMERC, its definatley worse than normal. Its really quite loud.

Easy as that... Called Mercedes, told them the issue, told me they will get the parts in, and repair will be done on Wednesday :) all under goodwill or warranty, whatever they want to call it...

Well, on my past two W211 E class's they have not ever replaced the pump but replaced the pipes with braided pipes, apparently the noise is not from the pump being faulty, but from the pipes causing vibration.
Will let you know on Wednesday night what they do...

Might be nothing more than slightly bending the aluminium heat shield so it does not contact the pipes. Thought my SBC pump was about to drop out at one point because there was such a dreadful din but that was all it was!

On the 350K pedal presses, is that the original or revised number? For obvious reasons the error message problem (as opposed to the much more serious the cable has dropped off so yer brakes have damn near gone) was first noticed by taxi drivers in Germany and they recoded it.

Evening gang!

Here is the Wednesday night update as promised, went in this morning to drop the car off, was asked by the service tech how I would like to pay? Naturally I said "pay for what???" he said "for the diagnostic", blah blah blah. I explained the situation and he insisted that I would have to pay and then see if I could claim back from goodwill.

Couldn’t be bothered arguing first thing in the morning so thought to hell with it, and said look, you look at the car, we will see how I pay when I come to collect the car.

Had a call at 330 to say that the car will be done under goodwill as the pump is faulty (what I told him in the morning) have been told that a pump has been ordered from another dealer who has it in stock, the car will need to stay overnight, and can collect it tomorrow.

So tomorrow it is :) I must say, he was helpful in the end and did say that they will do any other recalls whilst its in, and any software updates if needed...
