I know there have been hundreds of posts on this but having waded through most of them I am still confused. I have just bought a 2002 (52) E Class 270 CDi. Does this early 211 model have SBC Stop or Hold on it or was it introduced later? I ask this because I have tried to get it to work and failed. Maybe I am just doing it wrong. Also, how do you get the cruise control to brake for you in traffic? Any help appreciated.

It should have SBC. As you come to a stop, with your foot on the brake pedal, just give the pedal a quick dab. No need to push hard or far, just a short quick dab.

You'll see SBC H appear at the bottom of your central dash message screen. It it's not working you'll get an error.

I think you should have SBC on a 211 of that vintage.

To get 'SBC Hold' to work, when you have come to a complete stop, press the brake pedal a little further and you should then see SBC H come up at the bottom of the cluster.

To get 'SBC Stop' to work as you are braking under 40 mph, pull the cruise control lever towards you. You should then see SBC S at the bottom of the cluster. Now when you take your foot off the accelerator the car will automatically start to brake gently. You can also brake manually if you need to stop a little quicker without it switching itself off. It disarms itself automatically at speeds over 40mph.

Thanks guys. Will try it later on my home.

I don't think the pre 2004 had SBC Stop. My 2003 model didn't.

There were three SBC 'enhancements'

Hold - you pulse the brake pedal when stationary (some people find it takes a while to learn to do it right) and SBC-H comes up on the dash. Car holds itself until you pulse the brake pedal again to disable it or press the accelerator pedal to move off.

Stop - you activate the cruise control below 15 mph and the car will brake when you lift off the accelerator. Intended for slow moving traffic.

Soft Stop - when baking gently the car will managev the actual point at which the car stops so that it is smooth without a jerk.

Of these the Hold should be available on all SBC cars.

Stop seems to have been available on some 2004 cars. It had disappeared early 2005.

I haven't heard of a UK car having Soft Stop.

Stop and Soft Stop have probably been removed for liability reasons as they involve controlling the car's deceleration automatically.

I had trouble at first then realised that the car really has to be at a COMPLETE stop (as stated by PMTX) - then 'dab' the brake pedal

Guys, tried last night to see if I had SBC Stop or Hold on my 2002 car and I'm sure I don't. There's no mention of it in the manual and I tried all your suggestions to make it work – without success.

Must confess it can be tricky to do (could be you don't have it of course!) Where are you Alex? Maybe you will be near somebody who has/had had an SBC equipped W211?

Please see Post 7, it is NOT FITTED to your car.
