used sbs-s on the way into work this morning for the first time ... couldnt get over the fact i didnt have to break , must be a natural thing.

anyone else like it?

Morning Fuzzer,
Wife used it once, but it just did not feel 'right'.

12 months ownership, used once.

Regards,
John

I liked it on the demo car I drove, but it had been removed on my car when it arrived. Oh well...

Do you think it would be more useful in heavy city traffic where there would be a lot of slow stop, start driving?

I was in heavy city traffic :) might try it on the way home. I work and almost live in the city , so all i drive in is city traffic.

Found I tended keep my foot hovering over the brake so not that much of a saving of effort. Always stopped further away than I would have ordinarily because you are more cautious

Takes a little while to get used to it. Even so a rare heavy traffic only event now and I could live without it but not without SBC Hold.

Sorry. What is SBC-S? I suddenly had this flash up on the instument panel and went away when I turned off the ignition and back on? I dont remember doing anything specific to turn it on so initially I thought it was some braking error

Can anyone shed some light on it?

Thanks,
Nim

It's the facility within SBC to bring the car to a halt simply by removing your foot from the accelerator pedal in heavy traffic (i.e. the car applies the brakes itself without driver intervention). It's activation and use are described in the handbook.

Not got it on any of mine and to be honest, I don't think I would feel very comfortable with it.
Driver input and all that:D

Something not right here, SBC hold and SBC stop were introduced in 2003 you still have to use the brake pedal, but once stopped you can take your foot off again and the car will not move until you touch the accelerator.
Its a feature that you can bring up in the menu, when used with distronic it will bring the car to a standstill and then start the car again when the traffic moves off

Honestly I have not used the stop feature on the W211, unless I've tried it once and forgotten how it feels. But as far as I remember, you don't have to touch the pedal, it brakes to give a smooth deceleration once you lift the foot from the gas pedal. Those who have used it recently, may give the correct description how it works.

But I do use the SBS hold on the W211 frequently.

The W221 with Distronic Plus is a different beast, I let it brake to standstill most of the time without any hesitation.

Sorry, Television, SBC Hold and SBC Stop are differnet functions. SBC Hold was maintained up until SBC was dropped altogether, SBC Stop was deleted in 2004. You do not use the brake pedal when SBC Stop is in operation. The car stops itself.

I would bet a large amount of money that it was fear of litigation that caused this facility to be removed (Barrister to defendant: "You claim that your vehicle caused the pile up when it stopped without you using the brake pedal?").

Yes sure you can take your foot off and the car will still carry on braking, but it does not take into account the distance from the vehicle in front, so little point really, I dont know anyone who uses it like that

I know that they are different functions, I understand that the system that replaced SBC does have a hold function

I also see the the Distronic now only takes the car down to 18kmh and not stop the car, where as the new system does stop the car. My friends 221 does that

Sorry, Television. I wrongly inferred from your first post that your thought that SBS-Stop utilised the brake pedal, like SBC-Hold.

SBC Hold requires the foot-brake to be used to activate the system, whereas SBC Stop is designed to do away with using the foot brake at LOW speeds. My own view was that it goes against what we have programmed ourselves to accept as the norm.

I can see the reasons why it was developed but contrary to what everyone always claims about accountants ruling the roost, I think SBC Stop was a pure engineering feature that is very, very rarely used and I would query why it was ever installed?

I hate to disagree with most opinion, but I use SBC-Stop all the time in stop-start traffic. Like most things you have to get used to it, but once you're aware of what brake pressure it applies, etc, you just get on with it.

I'll miss it when this one goes next year.....

This then is the same as getting to know your distronic, I know when to intervene, I would hate to have a car without this now, but finding one with it is hard, maybe a Cl the next time

Respect for sticking with it, I suppose if we are constantly in slow moving traffic, it would be tempting to learn how to use it.

Does Distronic fetch you to a complete halt, and what distance will it keep from the car in front? I would think that with SBC Stop once you educate yourself into how to use it, then the driver will be in full control of stopping at whatever distance they thought right for each circumstance? Well done Mr E, you are the first driver I have heard that constantly uses this clever option.

Regards
John
