Just been to the dentist, parked car away from other cars and came back to this ..why why why do they do it? I'm not angry I feel too saddened and p*ssed off to be angry - I'm sure that will come later...Have tried T cut. etc not a jot of good...Any suggestions? Or is it a case of a paint job??

It's a fence, obviously.

And I'm really sorry that you've come back to find that - I would have been furious - they do it because they are no-hopers with nothing better to do than mindless acts like that.

I don't know what will work to get that out, but I'm sure if there is a solution someone will be along to tell you.

Where is it on your car, I can't quite tell?

I use something call G3 compound made by 3M, but it's quite aggressive and honestly that scratch looks too deep :( . The reason I ask where it is, is that I have used touch up which I have allowed a few days to dry then neatened up using G3, but you can only begin to get away with this on the bottom panels.

Hi Cockers,
I can feel your anger from here and if my car was damaged I would be spitting bullets, but when you have cooled down you might reflect.... get it reflect :o :o :o Sorry about that but your picture would be ideal in a 'Guess what it is' competition.

I can feel your anger and the need to lash out but that picture baffled me and I needed someone to establish what it was.

The people that key our cars are among everything else, COWARDS. They would never dream of doing this act in our prescience and I have nothing but contempt for them.

Good luck with the repair

Yours sincerely
John

One of my worst fears is something like that. There are many mobile repair outfits around that specialise in removing dings, chips and scratches.

I think it was Ken Dodd who, when being interviewed was asked what car he drove and he replied saying he used to drive a Silver Shadow. He said the car was wonderful to drive but he just got so fed up getting the coined and keyed scratches repaired, in the end he got rid of it and bought something like an old Ford Granada. Which funnily enough never got keyed or coined once. You can understand his point of view.

This may give you a better idea on the scrape..

Ouch.......
I dont suppose you noticed whether your car was the only one or whether others suffered did you?
Might be worth reporting to the police. They might have caught someone and another report might bring a weightier sentence.
All very hypothetical of course.

You should report this to the police really...

(edited:) Sorry, Dave, didn't see your post before I posted mine! Great minds think alike and all that! :D

Can't see them being interested.... I was parked away from other cars...and I cant see car making that scrape...

Gutted for you buddy. If you run your nail across it, can you feel the scratch?

If so then it'll require paintwork to fix.

If not then it may polish out with the right compounds and polisher.

I really feel for you. You work hard, buy something you want, take pride in owning it, look after it and then some pond life damages it  Anyway, moving from a philosphical to a practical note...

From the pictures I'd say that the scratch is too deep to deal with using cutting compound so it's going to need painting. Probably not going to be hugely expensive but it won't be a beer money job either. Go to a reputable body shop and ask them for a cash price: it'll help you decide whether or not an insurance claim is worthwhile.

Also, some insurance companies (Direct Line are one, there are others) will now pay to have vandal damage repaired without affecting your NCD, but only if you have reported the incident to the Police and have a Crime Reference Number for it. I suspect that this is the Insurance industry's way of getting as many car vandalism crimes reported so they can make the point that it's a problem that Plod and the courts do precious little about, but I don't have a problem with that. Even if you don't/can't go down the insurance route I'd still report it because it does raise the profile of the crime and eventually someone who sets policing priorities may actually see it as something that needs dealing with

It looks as if it's gone right through the colour coat, only real option is to have the panel painted, probably £200 worth IMO.

If you want to make it look less obvious, touch in paint and compound polish would work but on a car as nice as yours I would bite the bullet and have it done.

Not really much you can do about it, unless you were able to see it being done :(

Will

If that white showing in the scratch is the base coat, you are going to need a re-spray, I am afraid. Looks malicious, too.

Sorry to hear this.
I agree with others; report it, you never know.
From what I can see it looks to have gone through so will be a paint job. If you are really lucky it may polish out if it hasn't broken through the lacquer. Difficult to tell from the pic

Forget about going to the police.....they don't even show any interest if the car is stolen let alone scratched ! They simply won't bother and they will probably give you that "why are you wasting my time" look. They certainly won't bother spending police time on attempting to find out who scratched your car.

If you want to go to the police over this, all you will do is queue up in a police waiting room for ages for nothing really, which can be more depressing than the damage done to the car !

Regarding the repair depending on the colour the bodyshop may have to blow into the adjacent panels aswell in order to blend it in.

Shouldn't be more than £200 id say.

But if everyone adopts this "don't be bothered to report it because the police won't be bothered to respond" approach, then nothing ever changes. So yeah, it probably will get looked upon as a minor crime and one which no one will do much about, but the point is, it'll be recorded and that helps in the long run.

Help to do what ?.....they will probably laugh at you when you walk in there to complain that your car has been scratched ,with all the other serious crimes that are being reported nowadays ! Do you seriously believe that they will investigate this ???

Not only that, you will probably annoy everyone else in the queue behind you that are there to report more serious crimes, especially when they hear what you are there for. Don't forget everyone can hear what you are there for.

When was the last time you went into a police reception area to report anything ?....Its not a nice place !!
