Seems I sold my car to an idiot!!

Nobody is going to pay for the bike without inspecting it.

Your best bet is to place a classified ad with a high price & tell people if they are interested to come along & look at it.

The listing does offer the chance to inspect the bike before bidding and for those who are unable to view i have done a cold start video and put it on YT , with the offer of more vids should that want them.

So, what was under the covers?
I never did find out. At the time the vendor reluctantly muttered that they were “old Alfas”, and my neighbour who knew the vendor well later told me they were old Ferraris that he had owned for many years.

Nice, but very valuable; I can understand a touch of paranoia there.

i have an old Lambretta and when the garage door is up, you can guarantee the skip divers come along looking and searching and the remote is not near me. :wallbash: But hey sometimes i want to chuck it in a skip.:thumb:

Maybe it was both - one or more of these...!

These days I would NEVER have a stranger visit my home to buy something & I hope I'm never desperate enough for the money to do so.
The nearest I ever got was to have a car club member whom I could trace if required, buy some spares but the deal was done in my garage, not within my home. The rather expensive & rare car that normally resided in said garage was in a neighbours garage. At the risk of being paranoid all curtains were drawn.
On an associated matter having observed a suspicious man bothering a neighbour opposite I managed to take a photograph of him as he walked away from the front door.
BTW I don't live on a sink estate or in a 'rough' area, nor in a poncy posh area.
I don't think it's overly desperate to want to sell a car privately, I could have sold the car for £3500 part ex or nearer £6k privately, just seems prudent to do the latter.

You do have to be cautious of course and gauge who you're selling to as best as possible. I mean I have CCTV, I don't leave the keys in the ignition or leave the bonnet up whilst I'm not at the front of the vehicle etc. As cautious as you can logically be really. This is the first time I've ever had any hassle from selling a car.

In other news, it seems that the new V5 was issued by the DVLA so no more penalties have come my way and I've challenged the six that landed on my doorstep. 5x ULEZ charges and a parking fine.

If the guy has put the right details down on the V5, he'll have £460 worth of letters coming his way. I don't have much sympathy if I'm honest.

Have you moved address yet, thats the next move.
Ive only part x cars a couple of times, the rest sold on the doorstep with no problems.
Only phone kickers, who want to bid the pants off you and will never turn up.

I wouldn’t even worry about it you have evidence the car didn’t belong to you during these events

I can sympathise; I'm part way through restoring my 1979 Escort RS2000. Most neighbours don't know it's in my garage as it's been years since I had it out on the drive. In the meantime prices have shot up and being part restored makes it hard for me to insure it for any meaningful value since 'agreed value' insurance would need some nice photos to support it's supposed value.

At some point I'll have to get it out on the drive to give it a proper clean, so I'm going to make sure I've got some kind of insurance in place by that point, ideally one that I can revise once I can supply them with better photos (since it really does look decent once washed and the restoration work is all under the bonnet).

When the time does come to sell it I'll be a bit paranoid as well as I've heard stories of people coming round not to look at the car, but basically to suss out your security arrangements and/or trying to find out when you're out/on holiday, etc. Because of this I may end up taking it to a classic car auction instead and accepting a lower amount in my pocket after charges.

@Alex225 good to hear you've sorted out the fines your car's new owner caused.

Arrange viewing at a busy high st etc.

Genuine buyers might baulk at that though...they'll also expect to see the V5 and other paperwork if they're spending £20K+ so they'll see the address from the paperwork anyway. I know if you posted that someone is selling a car but won't let you go to their house, then plenty on here would say to walk away. Can't win really.

If they like the car take a deposit then proceed to home.

First rule of a private purchase....You buy from the sellers house and the address on the V5 matches that address. I would never meet a seller anywhere else....it screams hookie !

Well common sense sense prevailed with the ULEZ charges, received this the other day:

Not heard a thing from the parking ticket though but they said they can take up to 30 days to respond. Sounds like our HR team at work, but anyway.

That's 5 of the 6 tickets off my hands, although I've kept them all filed just in case.

Did you ask to see his drivers licence verifying his address and photo id?

reason I ask is...had a road traffic officer call me and barked that at me

after I sold an audi that was involved in a serious incident

Cash sale false name (before online banking being the norm) Live & Learn
My sister still has a paper licence ; also , it is not a requirement to have a licence at all in order to OWN a car ; only to drive one .

None of the above is your problem , neither is it your responsibility . He can bark all he wants .

Hi , chicken and egg situation.

I won't sell anything that involves a total stranger coming to my house but I would not buy anything unless I know where the seller lives !

How do you square that circle ? ;)
