Hello, could anyone recommend a garage to help me solve an ongoing problem with W124 300. 6 garages and counting and no-one can find a fault. However if car is not run for a few days it misfires after about ten minutes and then dies altogether. Breezed through service, MOT etc. but this problem remains a constant worry. I live in Edinburgh but I guess could travel anywhere within reason if they're good, Thanks

Sometimes if the car has sat for some time moisture collects inside the distributor body. When the engine heats up some moisture vapourises and causes a HT breakdown inside the distributor cap. Might be worth checking out?

Two garages I'd recommend in the Edinburgh region:

Used to use Lochrin Motors, on Lochrin place near Toll Cross. They were excellent and diagnosing a strange engine timing intermittant fault with my old mitsubishi colt a few years ago, which no one else could sort out. Haven't used them since moving out of town, but I know they're still there.

These days I use Inchkeith Motors in Lauder (Scottish Borders) They're great with my (and a mates) 124's and 123's. Good, old fashioned mechanics who listen to the engine, diagnose a fault then fix it. None of this plugging in computer nonsense.

Hope that's some help to you!

Go and speak to Carl at Edinburgh Motor Works, 137 High Street, Dalkeith. He's a Mercedes specialist. He looks after my W124 and his rates are very reasonable. Try him first before you throw your money at other garages, what he doesn't know about German cars probably isn't worth knowing. Good luck
