was driving along earlier today and pulled out onto a duel carraigeway whne the car lost power. its been the same since. the exaust sounds like a tractor. i filled it up a few miles before with Tesco's 99 momentum, does anyone think this has got anything to do with it?
the engine light had come on but there is no malfunction. i drove it for an hour to run teh pertol down and topped it up with V Power. it does seem a bit better since (but there was nearly 3/4 tank of Tesco)
when the car starts it feels like its not ticking over as it should but will accelarate as normal up to a point - then it goes into this limp mode. its as if the turbos arent kicking in - it will accelerate but quite predesterian like.

any ideas anyone
thanks
Gareth
p.s sorry for the random sentences (and spelling)

The Tesco petrol may have had water in it. Have a look in the fuel filters for evidence.

check with the garage - our local shell garage had one of their petrol tanks mistakenly filled with diesel a while ago by a dim tanker driver. It wrecked my bike engine, and the replacement, before I found out the cause after about 4 weeks
Symptoms exactly the same as yours, except the nikasil bore liners in my bike were destroyed.
The garage's loss adjusters wanted me to prove I'd bought the petrol/diesel from there - as if I'd got the receipt after all those weeks! Of course, they had perfectly good cctv of me filling up.
That's another reason why I think loss adjusters are crooks.

i never really through receipts away but as i walked out i did!
i did use my clubcard and as you say thats why they have CCTV
the car is due to go in for new pads and discs tomorrow so i will get the garage to put it on Star to find out what its showing
cheers

Leaving aside my bitterness about my own episode...
Consider having a look at the fuel in your tank. When it finally dawned on me (after replacing ECU, fuel delivery system etc. etc) I could actually smell diesel in the petrol.
I know it sounds a long shot, but it happened to me and your symptoms sound very much the same.
I had a lot of exhaust smoke too - that's why I replaced the valve stem guides and seals - doh!
Maybe also contact the garage.

Happened to my wife, almost as described. She filled up and then 3 miles down the road her car stalled and refused to re-start. Water in the petrol. Garage paid for the repairs which included new injectors etc.

Regards,

Take a sample of your fuel before you dilute it any more. Your sales slip may actually indicate the pump no and fuel dispensed [ how do they calculate the cost otherwise?] 4 possibilities exist.

1 You put in the wrong fuel[ diesel] =unlikely

2 The fuel is contaminated [ with water] as Stratman suggested= quite likely after this winter

3 TESCO's put diesel in a petrol tank= possible -----consider going back and trying to get a "clean " sample of the fuel from the same pump in a "emergency can" for evidence.

4. You have an engine fault unrelated to fuel

First thing I would do is drain the fuel tank ASAP to minimise further damage and sample the fuel. Hope you get it sorted.

the car went into Colin Ferns today for the planned discs and pad change. they put the car on the diagnostics. the car was misfiring and it needs a new part (sorry forgot excatly what he said it was) some sort of valve which costs a couple of £. they will need 3 hrs labour to fit it but the part needs to be ordered from Germany. thankfully thats all it seems to be

got a call from Colin Ferns today. they installed the new valve but the casr is still misfiring. now for a bit of advice. they said they think its the coil pack in in of the cylinders (£1,000) but they would investigate. i said in that case i would take it to a merc dealer as it has the extended warranty. they called bacl an hour later saying they tood the spark plugs out and they are in a mess, particularly the one on the cylinder they menioned earlier - they dont think its the coil pack and they should change them. i mentioned the warranty and they said its a service thing so it wouldnt be covered (so they could do it) i guess it needs done as i dont see it being done in any of the previous services. anyway its still going to cost £500 - hopefully this will sort it out

Keep us updated!

Mate your CL65 is the same setup as my S600 V12 twin turbos.
What you are experiencing is the fuel is not burning correctly and getting discharged. The fact your turbos are not kicking in sounds like Cats to me, they sit behind the turbos, even on a misfire your turbo should be working.
Check them out, aparantly on V12 mercs they are a nightmare and go wrong. Any unburnt fuel due to misfire goes in the cats and because they are ceramic they destroy the cats.

My car has been stumping the mechanics for a whilst now and it all came down to blocked cat.

Have you ever heard a short ping noise from underneath the car?

The cats throw and engine warning light on with no malfunction btw. Coil packs going wrong normally throw a malfunction, correct me if im wrong.

Now that's what I call Crystal Ball Diagnostics!

Colin knows his stuff. :)

thanks biturbo - so i collected the car today. they changed all the spark plugs and said it was running fine. i collected the car and sure enough it was. i got 1 mile down the road and its happened again. what the garage did say was that the plugs on cylinder 6 were caroaded. im taking the car to mercedes in epson on monday morning. either way it needs to get sorted out. will be interested to see what they say. the garage also thought that some seals could be leaking - all in all not a great week!!
