Shot in the Dark - where is this?

I think its taken a bit later... late 70's, maybe early 80's. (sailors often still tend to wear cravats and smoke pipes so thats not a particularly good date indicator) 60's &70's clothing had big collars too, again leading me to think late 70's to early 80's. (didnt Lady Di have a photo taken in a very similar blue Cardy in 1976/7?)

The red dinghy looks like a fiberglass Enterprise. They wood ones came out in the mid 50's but I dont think glass fibre ones came out until much later.

Location looks like the thames... Oxford way maybe.

EDIT. I'd say taken around the Medley Sailing club. Medley is pretty much as high up the Thames as you can properly sail. Its very narrow but has undeveloped riverside still (rather rare). Have a look at the background of the pics in the site below. Looks very familiar.

What do you know about the people in the photo? Could be local to where they live (obviously)... ok its a late 60's image... Sorry to ask (i dont want to be rude) does you or your father have any recolection of trips with his late brother? Is your aunt still alive? Doing family History for so long now i find every bit of info from family more important for clue's, one week can change from the next. Take a dictaphone or your mobile phone recorder with you and ask as many questions as you can.!!!!..hope this helps.. a little

Cant help you with location, but I had a quick go with Photoshop to sharpen/clean up the 1st image slightly, (im sure others may do better):

Not much help I know, but wherever it is it doesn't appear tidal. There is no visual evidence of a rise or lowering of the water level just by looking at the river banks (unless the photo was taken at high tide). So there is a reasonable chance its at least 5-10 miles away from the sea.
Its also quite wide and there cant be that many rivers THAT wide over 5 miles inland. So that rules out the Thames estuary area and around the Solent.
Its also unlikely to be the Norfolk Broads as there are no reed beds.
Its a shame the resolution isnt a bit better as there is a notice just to the left of the red boat on the trailer that could probably help.
I would estimate the year to be between 1960 and 1964. Erring closer to 1960. I would say the picture was taken in pub grounds as the lady is holding a drink in a glass.
Taking everything into account, I would take a flying stab in the dark and say its near the south coast of England. Probably either Kent/Sussex/Hampshire or Dorset.
If you REALLY want to know, why not create a facebook/myspace page and post the photos there. That would reach a much larger audience with a better chance of a lucky hit.
Good luck.

Could you zoom in on the black/white notice in the other photo and see if that reveals anything useful. Thanks.

Personally I'm with you on the Hants,Sussex,Dorset or Kent location as being more probable.

Fibreglass dinghies started in about 1961-62 afaik.

Its possible that that the picture is relatively recent and the people in the photograph are suffering from the rare "Kenneth More Syndrome" contracted by watching too many black and white Elstree Studio movie reruns in a darkened room.

I've put a post on the Thames Forum , on YBW.com , if it's on the Thames , they will know where ...

The power of the net...its ACE

Like you say someone some where WILL know.

It is definitely 1973 or older.

The actual colour of the photo is definately pre 70's which is why I think early to mid 60's.

Any change of seeing the village in the background, the name of the boat ( on the right), or the sign any clearer - you would probably need to rescan these areas of the original slide to get them ?

No - there was nothing on the slide, the original slide was badly faded, unfortunately.
