Was the e500 the basis for the e60 AMG (so the e60 is a merc/porsche collabaration with a few AMG bits and a bored out engine) or were they complete separate beasts? Pardon my ignorance if this is a really obvious question :o

EDIT:I suppose I should also ask what were the main differences on the 500e compared to the standard 124?

I think the W124 Chassis had a contribution from porsche... or maybe just the e500 chassis... not sure.

MrMotul has a 500E and he used to have the E60 AMG. I think he was telling me the only difference was the engine... as well as some value-added extras (dials/badging etc).

only the e500 had the contribution.the difference is engine, brakes etc.even the front wings on the e60 were wider

Matt

yep, 500E was basis for E60.

In addition to what the 500E already had, E60's gave :

- big bore plus 5.6L crankshaft to take displacement to 6 litres
- high-lift camshafts
- officially, 63bhp increased power output
- lowered and stiffened suspension through AMG springs/struts/shocks
- AMG fatter anti-roll bar
- AMG rear exhaust box
- AMG catalytic converters

No bodykit, no wheels.

In summary :

- 500E is a MB/Porsche collaboration

- E60 is variant of 500E breathed on by AMG (approx 109 built)

- E500 Limited is variant of 500E offered as a Special Edition, only 500 made

- E60 Limited is variant of 500E Limited, breathed on by AMG (approx 11)

Essentially, the E60 Limited (circa 11 of these) is the ultimate 500E to have !

The wings all everything are the same in the E500 and E60 AMG.

Some E60's were E500 conversions and some were factory originals.

The E60 AMG had a 381BHP official V8 engine (although some think it had 420BHP).

They are both build by Porsche and were both LHD.

The E60 is obviously much more sought after and difficult to find.

If you want to know anything else please let me know.

Wings are same part number between 500e and e60.

E60 changes are puly mechanical, no cosmetics.

Why do people think that? A simple mistake or did someone actually dyno one of these and found significantly more power? Were AMG deliberately understating performance as "green issues" grew ever stronger in Germany?

As rumour has it, MB deliberatley understated the power of the '60' V8 engines, so as not to damage the prospects of the M120 V12, rated at a tad more horsepower, officially 418bhp without cats, but circa 400 with cats.

IIRC the E60 engine was shared with the pre-facelift SL60.

There were similar rumours about SL60 power output; M-B were said to have under-stated it to reinforce the V12 SL600 as the 'top' model.

Snap :)

Were any estates ever made of these? W124's that is as I know a number of E60's were made in the next modal shape (which slips my mind was it the W210?)

I'm sure I've read Bernie Ecclescake and Mr M Schumacher both owned E60 Estates....or am I talking out of my bottom?

Yep, 210 E60s was a production line model, E60 w124 estate is very rare. Bernie defo had one and a few people in Japan have one !
