SL320 Cylinder 5+6 Misfire

9 times out of ten I'd say it wasn't the ECU! I don't know any late model R129 owner that has had a problem with theirs - all sensor faults or failed cats / coil packs / jumper leads etc.
 
they are going down a blocked n/s cat, as they checked underneath and the side with the problem seems to be really hot one half and colder on the other sideso top half hot on precat bottom colder, and there is black soot on the exhaust where they join indicating the cat also.
Would you reccomend changing both cats or just do the one thats knackerd?

What are the readings from the lambda and O2 sensors for the 'blocked' cat? How do they compare to the 'good' one? If one has gone I'd probably fork out and get both done - could always offer the other on eBay as a spare or keep it just in case.
 
stats they went by the soot and the temprature of the cats, i dont think there was a check on the sensors? they had it plugged into star diagnostics as the check engine light is on and i know the maf readings were ok not sure about the other things will ask when i go after work....
i checked at mb and they want £1200 for just the cats!!!! i think this is extortionate!!!! compared to aftermarket at £700 for the pair.... i was debating on changing the one thats broke from mb, but for that price i could get both on a aftermarket.....
 
You should be able to get readings for all the sensors using diagnostics. I have heard that aftermarket cats are not efficient enough for MB tolerances - there was a discussion on MBShop IIRC.

im pretty sure taht aka$h had aftermarket cats and television on mb owners put on aftermarket, they havnt said anything about the tollerance? mind you i havent spoke to them directly yet either...
 
i have been told taht the cars can run without the cats and pass emmision tests aswell on mot.... klp was saying that i should just get the cat taken out and weld the box back on after removing, but im not to sure about that...
 
IIRC = if I remember correctly.

I very much doubt the M112 will run correctly without cats unless the ECU is modified - besides if they were fitted to the car then they have to be present to pass an MOT - regardless if it can pass emissions tests without them.

Have a read of this if you haven't done so already.
 
im really in two minds now, i would like to go for oe but i could save £500 on aftermarket and oe. i can get oe for around the £1200 mark but would still need to get the fitting kit aswell
 
You are only saving money if the cats do the job OEM ones do and last as (or not!) as long. Some MB dealers offer 15% off of parts - I can get 10% as an MBOC member if it helps. I would not get aftermarket ones unless I knew someone that had fitted them to an R129 and was happy with them.

oem ones supposed to last 100k or 10 yrs , my sl is only on 65k and is 2001, so even if after market do 3-5 yrs its still good if you ask me

think i answered it there too! dont know how late your merc is so sorry for that , but i still repair lots of merc pms and hfm ecu that misfire on 2 cyls
this may NOT be the case on yours.
if its cat related i can obtain yhose too.
 
Personally i would gut the defective cat. The car should pass the MOT as you are only gutting one of them and this way if the prob is still there you haven't wasted £1200.

Still don't think its the cats though.
 
klp, there was some black soot which i saw yday under the car along the exhast joins and also when they heat tested the cat one side was hot and the other side they said top of cat was alot hotter than the bottom of the first cat.
I really dont know its a hell of alot of money if its not the cats....
 
right guys been on a cat hunt!!!!! found that there is very few places taht will get you a decent german cat, i searched all over and found that 2 places that will get you german cats KMS and GSF. GSF offer a make called BM which is german and KMS offer Eberspacer. BUT the price is alot different. Now having read a load of forums eiberspecher are supposed to be the oem for mercs, im not 100% but i think they are and they are coming in at just under 1K which is £200-300 cheaper that mercs so i may be opting for a pair of these..... will keep u all posted, i think i will get both the cats replaced as if one has gone the other cant have much longer left ....

Have they confirmed its the cats? Its an awful lot of money if your mechanic is 100% sure.
 
Nav, my mechaninc and the gut who does the mb recovery are both saying they are 200% sure, although i am not at this point

Get them to empty the suspect cat, should take 30 mins. If it rectifies the fault you may get away with emissions saving yourself £1k!
 
I know what you are saying nav, but if the cats gone it will need to be replaced at some stage, i have been reading and seen taht the wrong cat or no cat at all messes with the ecu and keeps the cel on. so i ordered cats, got both as if one has gone the other wont b far behind.... will keep u posted mate, thanks loads for all ur help i really appreciate it mate and stats..
