SL500
Hi everyone, first post and first mercedes :)

Bought an SL500 and while I'll love the car the passenger side doo speaker has blown.

Struggling to find anywhere that sells them. eBay have nothing.

Anyone know somewhere in the UK and whether this is best a professional job or an easy DIY?

Thanks

Was going to go for an original replacement as the speakers sound really good in my opinion, Great bass etc. Will pop along to a local specialist and have a chat with them anyway.

Thanks

The speaker is an odd shape as it is in a housing that points into the door, I had to replace a blown one, not too expensive from the dealer and quite an easy thing to fit. ( Tip - buy some door card clips for reassembly )

You have to replace with MB one, its a 3 way speaker in a special enclosure. Mirras is correct, buy some door card clips. Door card off, unscrew old speaker, screw in new one.

If you have BOSE speaker is more expensive than standard - get the correct one !

The 2 doors are different ..

Had a wee look in the shed and found the blown one... here's a few pix...

MB Inchcape are doing that one ( non Bose ) at £78 + VAT, ask for discount at your local MB and they should be about the same price. Left and right are different part numbers as Richard says above.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Mine is the Non Bose system.

PArt of me is thinking about changing the COMAND unit for an aftermarket double DIN but was worried about all the bose equipment. But as that's not an issue...might do now.

But then would put quality aftermarket speakers in the doors. Anybody done this? Know the sizes etc needed?

Thanks

As the speaker housings are bespoke I think the only thing you could do to use aftermarket speakers is buy the right sized drivers to mount on the housing... this is not the road I would take, the stock units aren't that bad. If you were to decide to use aftermarket units you could remove your current ones and use them as a guide.

So far as replacing the comand unit is concerned, I looked at that with mine and chose not to as the integration was important to me, display in the dash etc.

I'll try and post a pic later with a measuring tape to allow you to roughly guess the sizes but don't spend any money based on this .....

YEah, spoke to caraudiosecurity about this and they said leave the Headunit in. Speak wise - as it's not Bose (mercedes confirmed) I would need 6.5 speakers in the doors as it's definitely the bass in the units that have gone.

Might just go to Merc and get them to fit new standard ones, rather than mess about. Especially as the sound and bass was amazing when I first got the car

It's not a difficult job to do but will cost you a lot of money if you break something in the process of removing the door card ( more than just a card it's a fibreglass moulding with all the parts mounted on it) and unscrewing one speaker and replacing with the new. New door clips are essential though to avoid rattles.

Hi John, there are some on ebay at the moment, there is also a post on there for Bose in USA that are selling new ones for 90 dollars I think it was.
