That car is WAY overpriced I think there is an SL500 Silver arrow going for that sort of cash at Cribbs in Bristol let me think 97 SL or 2001 fairwell SL same price...

You can't really compare an SL60 with an SL500, and everything being equal the SL60 is in a different league to an SL500. However, probably overpriced though...

The Silverarrow was not a normal SL500 it was a selection of the last cars of the R129 production run, and was specified with pretty much every normal extra as standard.

I agree that the sl60 holds an air of respect, but I think a final collectors edition will hold more respect in another 5, 10, 50 years and you have to remember that cars have got faster in the last 8 years...

I personally feel that both cars are no longer 'new' cars - and in a few years time the SL500 will not matter quite so much WRT its age (other than the 'Last Edition' type desirability). The fact that the SL60 is as expensive as a newer SL500 says it all to me - it's probably more desirable, certainly a different car though.

As a comparison in a way that I can relate to, the W201 190E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 are easily worth more than a 'LE' (very very late model - 'Limited Edition')

There are some instances that always surprise people - eg, one of the world's most expensive cars ever sold through an auction was a war time Mercedes-Benz bought in this country. Apparantly not many people bought German cars over here during the war, and as such it is quite rare...

Interesting stuff,

Will

Thats the point :) It shouldn't be :) last summer there was a P reg SL60 doing the rounds for about 18K  and I spotted one on autotrader a few months ago for 19K So 28K on an R reg (when the dealer won't proclaim the milage or service history) is deluded at best :D

Maybe the mileage, specification or the history of the vehicle commands the price tag. One of the best second hand Porsche retailers that I know of doesn't specify the mileage of their vehicles and they sell some incredible cars! :D

If it is too expensive then perhaps it will not sell, but the value of a car is determined by what someone is willing to pay. If no one is willing to pay that price - it won't sell. ;) If it sells, someone thinks it's worth it. :)

Only worth £22k tops. If i remember its done nearly 70k so its not cheap.

IMHO (as the owner of an SL60) they are worth a premium over the SL500 for the following reasons:
- substantially more power and torque, (similar to the SL600 without the disadvantage of the extra weight of the V12, and the (supposed) reliability/cost issues of the V12).
- bigger brakes, wider wheels
- sportier AMG suspension set up
- slightly different bodywork (there is an extra lip on the rear wheel arches)
- altogether a more focussed sports model than the SL500 or 600.
- rarity value. I understand from several sources that there are only around 25 in this country.
- arguably will hold its value better than an every day SL500 and may some time down the line be more collectable. The Final Edition/Silver Arrow models simply have an upgraded interior and a few bits like folding mirrors. Some people like it, some don't.

The prices they come up at seem to vary wildly. There are some advertised on Auto Trader for £35K+, and others in the low £20Ks. How long they take to sell is anyone's guess. I think if you do want it, bargain hard and if its got 70K miles on it then £22-£23K is a fair price. Allow yourself a few grand for "the worst case" and you've got a car that beats 99.5% of everything on the road for luxury and power, for well under £30K.
Find yourself an independent specialist to check it over and look after it. Things get pricey if you need new tyres (275s on the back!!), new brakes or other special AMG parts. Otherwise standard service costs are no different to a 500.
Then go find yourself a nice empty bit of dual carriageway............You will not regret it.

what is the power and torque difference of a SL 60 AMG over an SL 500?

SL60 - 381 bhp @ 5500 rpm, 427lb/ft @ 3750 rpm

SL500 - 302bhp, 339 lb/ft torque

SL60 is roughly a 25% increase in power and torque over the SL500.

there is a BIG difference. is it the 2 valve V8 (as opposed to the 3 valve V8 of the current AMGs)?

wish I had known about the SL60 AMG .. sounds really awesome

do you have pics of the interior and the engine bay?

I thought they were 4 valve V8's and V12's back then?
I also thought that the S600, CL600 and SL600 of the early 90's produced ~400bhp stock?

They were all 4 valves.

The V12 600 was originally with 408 bhp and later 394 bhp, but the V8 60 should be lighter and marginally more torquey.

SL60 is a glorious machine!

Fitting of cats reduced the 600s' bhp didn't it from the magic 408?

O wasn't it an SL73, because there's 1 on Merc World Racing?
