Slight Whine

Have you checked for play on the rear wheel bearings yet? Worth a quick check - takes no time and costs nowt.
I had a W202 that did 220,000 miles and, although the differential had lots of play (worn gearing), I can't remember there being any noticeable whine. Although this DOES happen, of course, with many cars.
Wheel bearings would be the best place to start, I would think. If not, stick a second hand diff’ in.

He has already solved it!

Tyres, eh? What were the duffers you removed?

Even good quality tyres can cause unwelcome noise, it depends on the car, the road surface and the state of the tyres with regard to tread depth and inflation.

I remember a Mondeo that came with horrid Coninental Eco contact tyres, low road noise but awful in terms of grip and response. I moved to Dunlops which were a major improvement except for noise.

Manufacturers often develop a car with a couple of tyre brands / types and will "tune" the noise , vibration and harshness characteristics to suit those.

Hi,
They came on the car and were fullrun which as i understand means "death" in china because thats how dangerous they were even brand new.I have tried out these new syron race 1's and so far im impressed, very quiet and superb grip in wet and dry.See how they go though.
cheers

Syron Race 1, eh? I'll do a bit of reserch. I've got a couple of Good Year Efficient Grips to replace.
