SLK 170 Exhaust Query

Hi everyone,

well i may as well start at the beginning, i bought my slk the other week knowing the exhaust was loud, i thought this was due to the baffles in the backbox, so today the 2nd hand back box came, and after putting it on, it seems just the same, it just sounds like its got a performance exhaust on, quite silent at tick over but very raspy and loud when reving the car,
the owner had a new CAT fitted last year, but this was a aftermarket part, so if anybody could help my questions are

*Are slk`s loud any way ? im just guessing it shouldnt sound like its got a big bore on it when it goes past 2500rpm
*how many silencers should it have on it?

im sure the last owner said it had a sports cat,, (i may have been dreaming that bit up) would that make it much louder?

i know the 2nd hand exhaust may be at fault as well, but i wouldnt expect 2 good ish looking backboxes to be knackerd

if anybody has an old slk and has any ideas please help!

Generally the SLK has a relatively quiet exhaust, but i've driven a 230 with the CAT completely removed and it was very loud, so my guess that its the non standard CAT that is making it noisier. But make sure there arent any leaks in the system which would also make it louder and would reduce performance too.

here is my CAT thats fitted on the car, shouldnt it have 2 small ones next to each other??
if anyone has a slk 1998 can they just have a look to see if this CAT looks right
