hi all, im new in her an new to MB's. I currently have a 4.0l soarer but have decided I want a convertible. looking at slk 350 and was just wondering if anyone had any advice as to what to look out for, any buying tips. the one I have in mind is a 2005. so any advice at all would be welcome, thanks

Run the engine number via here before you buy. Early ones had some issues. The best part of 300bhp in a SLK should be entertaining :)

hi, thanks for replying. entertaining is what draws me to them. unfortunately we live on the isle of wight so when I go look at a car on the mainland I need to make a decision about buying there and then as its an expensive time consuming trip

My wife has had an R171 SLK350 for almost 5 years and it's been a great car and great fun too.

As far as buying tips go, I'd say look for the highest spec car you can afford, and in particular make sure you get one with AirScarf (if it has that it will also have heated seats) as it makes a real difference as to how many days of the year you can comfortably use it with the roof down.

As far as checking the car over, obviously make sure everything works properly. Check for signs of water ingress around the roof seals, including looking for evidence of the spare wheel well being or having been wet. If it looks like there is or has been a problem then walk away as the roof motor doesn't like being damp and is costly to replace. Check also that the heater fan works properly. Blocked drains can cause this to suffer water damage and fail.

One other thing is that when checking the tyres over remember that the fronts tend to wear the inner edge ahead of the centre and outer, so at casual glance can look like they have a reasonable amount of life left when in fact they need (or are close to needing) replacing.

…..live on the isle of wight …..

It's going to be a challenge using that bhp then………..

hi Phil, thanks for the advice. the roof mech is the part that I think bothers me the most as never had a hard folding roof before. have been looking online and found a couple that have heated and cooled seats, the airscarf is another feature that appeals to me.
will keep all these points in mind when I go to view.

I will think of a way to use the horses.....my soarer has a few and they get used quite well
