Nothing, the reputation isn’t necessarily accurate. Shop around though as prices vary between main dealers.

It’s also the reason why people pay over the odds for parts on eBay because they assume that main dealers will be more expensive, after all they have the “glass palaces” to pay for, where as the bloke on eBay is operating from his dining table. True, but the bloke on eBay bought the part from a main dealer and added their costs and margins knowing that people assume.

It’s always worth trying the main dealer, shopping around between main dealers and asking for a discount on parts and servicing.

Does roadside assistance apply if the car is 2014 model, serviced at Indy in the past?
If serviced at a dealer then it will come with 12 months roadside assistance, renewed for 12 months at each service.

So a one off A service at a main dealer qualifies for 12 months assistance if serviced by an Indy previously?

Yes, but confirm with your dealer. Some dealers do a low cost “value” service which doesn’t include roadside assistance so make sure you’re buying the service you expect.

I would stick with the independent even if the price is the same if you have built up a relationship with him and you can depend on his help when you face other problems with the car.

And here ladies & gentlemen, we have the ultimate Nerd question... 😉😉😉

Further update,
Main dealer phoned to offer A service at £179 and MOT at £40. Confirms that 12 month breakdown cover will only apply if I have a B service at £1000 plus.
Also Indy is happy for me to supply my own oil making his price now £190 (including my cost of oil, His MOT price is £50.
But agree I should stay with my Indy in case of future problems, but he doesn't wash it😀
Although I had a failed rear air strut which the Indy quoted £259 for the part, I bought one from Germany for less than £100!

That’s not an A service then. An A service includes breakdown cover as long as the service includes all additional items which are due at that time and mileage according to the schedule. Some services have no additional items, some have lots.

So if your A service also required a spark plug change and you asked them to quote without the spark plug change - despite it being due - then you can’t really expect them to then throw in breakdown cover because it’s not the due service.

Even so at £179 that’s a good price, and most independent garages will do - and not do - whatever it takes to win the work at the highest price you’ll pay at the lowest cost to do the work, and not throw in breakdown cover.

I agree with the sentiment of using who you trust and who you will go to when there’s an issue, whether that’s a main dealer, an independent Mercedes specialist, or an independent back street garage.

The dealer says because the last service was an A, that this service must be a B to qualify despite the car only having done 2500 miles in the year.

Yes almost all Mercedes alternate A B A B A based upon time (12 months) or mileage (for high mileage drivers). If a B service is due but you ask for an A service then it’s not following the schedule so it won’t be eligible for roadside assistance.

Some cars built in the mid noughties had variable service intervals and could prompt consecutive A or consecutive B services, but there won’t be many of those left now, and those which are will not follow the service schedule.
