slk350 with airscarf plus E280CDI Sport Est
I have been looking at what is avaliable used up to 1 Year old. Both 280`s & 350`s.Both are similar price.I therefore an unsure as which way to go.Head says 280-Running costs, fuel, not overpowered for my wifes 2 mile round commute.Heart says 350 and Go Go Go.In these days of green issues will the 350 become less desirable to 2nd hand market in 3 to 4 years.

What would you do?:)

I doubt it.... Mercs have never really been prone to devaluation by the greenies... yes if you were choosing between a 3 and a 6 litre then maybe an issue, but i would say go for the 350, its the better car and residuals are always better on mercs with the right engine...

Im just about to order an SLK 280, it will be the facelifted one too. So im assuming that you will be buying new, you will also be one of the very first to have the 'new' SLK.

I have driven both the 280 and 350, i swayed towards the 280 for fuel costs and it has enough power for me. I started off going for the 200K. Its that sound of the V6 I wanted more than anything, so it had to be the 280. The 350 has thundering perfomance and is absolutely fun to drive!

Which ever you choose will be great, but if fuel costs arnt important to you, go for the 350! Im very confident that there will always a demand down the line for these cars, from what ive learned, the SLK 280 is the harder to sell on, people either go for the 200K or straight to the 350. The difference between the 280 and 350 is currently marginal, but on the facelift will be a much bigger gap in the bhp, top speed..etc..etc

Good luck.

Always go with the heart, 350 every time. Also, if they are about the same price at 18 months old the 350 has depreciated further, so you've saved more;) .

At least that's the 'man-logic' I would be using to justify a similar purchase to my missus.

you can never have too much power .. 350 everytime.

the difference in fuel consumption on the motorway will not be significant

Yup V6 power everyday of the week, unless of course you are in the market for the SLK55AMG, the engine in that is just wonderful (though not as sporty as my 32AMG) :bannana:

350 every time. More toys, more power. Less likely to be accused of having hairdresser tendencies:)

So are the new prices out for the facelift model? What is the increase?

Get the biggest engine you can afford...:D

For me it would be the bigger engine every time(much to Mr P's joy!) but that's only the right answer if you like power. Some people don't. For many the 280 is a perfect proposition - it is hardly a snail when all said and done. If you were talking the 200 then I would say that is underpowered. If you're looking at this type of car then it needs to have something going under the bonnet. The 280 does, the 350 more so.

I just bought a new 280 slk and prefer the front spoiler to the new cleft lip look. I used to have a boxster s so wanted power but being as I will use it for travelling weekly across most of the uk I also needed a little economy. The 200 would not meet my needs after being used to a porsche. I drove a 350 many times and side by side with a 280 at the dealership and unless going flat out couldnt really notice a big difference. The 280 is still a V6 and has that wonderful sound and seems faster to drive than the porsche S model. It handles in the wet better and seems more stable. I have driven 900 miles so far and find the power more than adequite. I think mercedes have breached a much needed gap to those who think the 200 doesnt match it's looks for power and the 350 too much if you want to keep your licence clean. The 280 is in the middle, plenty of power to over take very quickly and when on the motorway i am getting 31mpg at best, although the engine still needs to loosen. One other point, I thought the flat 6 of the porsche engine was superb but with the top down on the SLK V6 280 the sound is just soooo sexy.

  As soon as the 350 becomes a consideration my brain would knock out of gear and the 55AMG woukd be parked on my driveway

You are asking to chose between the 280 or 350, so it has to be the 350 :o

psssst........ Go for the 55AMG, you only live once :D

Good luck with the decision

John
