Hi, I have a standard SLK230K with 16" wheels and Falken tyres. The car suffers badly from tramlining. Has anyone with a std car and 16" wheels found a solution to this? I understand tyre choice is very important.

Thanks,
Mark

If it was me I be looking to do this in order:

1. Full alignment (Wheels In Motion is one company that can do this)
2. Change to a tyre that doesn't have a solid tread band/line down it like the falkens do.
3. Get suspension / steering rack checked
4. I assume you have checked tyre pressures but it's always worth mentioning.

Hi,
As you say tyre choice is very important, but so is steering geometry, ensure you have nothing worn suspension wise and get a proper 4 wheel alignment done.

I had this on my SLK 230 and on changing the worn ( 2 - 3mm) front tyres to Contisport 3's, same as on the rear, the problem disappeared.

Hi, thanks for your replies I'll look in to 4 wheel alignment and some different tyres.

Check the steering drag link for worn joints, first.

Hi thanks for all your help. It turns out the steering damper was shot. Only had a short drive since having it changed, first impressions are that it isn't trying to pull itself off the road any more.
