June 2002 SLK32///AMG. OCT 2007 CLK350 AMG Sport Convertible.
I'm currently arguing the toss with MBUK customer services regarding the heated seat I'm facing having to replace. To date I have had the heated backrest on the driver’s seat replaced, and with the latest repair to the passenger seat pending, it will make six heated seat squabs replaced in total, (To do this, they have to replace the seat covers as the heater element is stitched in to it), fitted on my SLK32AMG.

I recently had the driver’s side replaced with MB contributing half the cost early February of this year. I paid the other £300 ($588.75 US). Anyway not three weeks later my wife tells me the passenger seat is now not working. On taking it to the dealership for checking, they confirm it needs replacement.

Clearly there is a quality/design issue with the seats; therefore I’m arguing that they are not fit for purpose. My car I‘ve had from new has covered 26,000 miles registered June 2002. The other piece of information is that the seat squab was last replaced on the passenger seat April 2004, but that said has hardly ever been sat in, and the heater function maybe used a dozen times in total. The seat is in show room condition with no sign whatsoever of any ware, or that it had ever been sat in or used. I’d defy anyone to tell the difference between it and the new one I’ve just had fitted to the driver's seat last month.

My point is this:
If this was the sixth or seventh water pump, or motor, or the sixth supercharger requiring replacement having only covered 26,000 miles, questions would without doubt be raised in respect of build quality and design.

So my questions are as follows:

1) I know other people have had issues with the AMG seats, but how many SLK32 owners out there have had this experience?

2) How many seat covers were replaced before you gave up fixing them or opting to do what a fellow member did on his car, by fitting another element under the existing seat cover. (I think off a slk320 or a 230 seat which is available as a separate item)

3) Do you think it reasonable that I should be asked to pay for yet another repair on the seats, taking all into consideration?

MB again has so far said they will contribute the same amount as before, (£300), as a good will gesture all parts will be covered by a two year warranty).

Most I would say. I've lost count of them in fact!! I've had them replaced in my C32 too.

Probably for as long as MB pick up the cost. They then fit the separate element or leave it broken.

I would like to think goodwill would prevail, but pragmatically speaking goodwill can't go on indefinitely, and they must draw a line in the sand somewhere - and that will always be too soon for us owners, and too late for DCUK.

When was the last repair/replacement carried out? Surely the last repair is guaranteed for some time isn't it?

The last repair on the passenger seat was April 2004 when the car was still in warranty, however the seat is rarely sat in and the heater switched on maybe a dozen times since its been replaced. The seat looks in showroom mint condition with no sign of wear at all.

As mentioned in my previous post I've only just replaced the driver's seat heater seat cover last month. And I don't feel inclined to keep paying £300 for a facility that works just 12 times before it breaks again!

i have teh same issue on my car, where the pads have stopped heating, i saw a thread on here some where about replacing yourself, i think that the e class seat pad was the cheapest and its just a matter of remove and replace i think.....

good luck

It was me that carried out the cheapish fix using the heater pad from the non-AMG SLK seat (£60 each) I'd fixed both front seat using this method and works fine and has'nt failed yet . Certainly would'nt pay £280 for a complete seat cover a waiting it to fail in a years time as it's a known design fault which Merc has'nt bothered to rectify

I think you'll find that warranty repairs are only warranted until the original manufacturer's warranty expires ie 3 years from new (in the UK).

I haven't had any seat heater probs with my 6-year old E55 (different seat I expect) but have had a few glitches on the passenger seat airbag's child sensor. It has cured itself fttb (could it be weather-related??).

heated seats

hi there

my fater has a new 2007 E55 which is fully loaded, when we tried the heated seats they were not working, the seats were replaced under 'warranty' 2 weeks later the same problem but now the back passenger side heater was not functioning, so back to the dealer, they ran a full diagnostics and said that it required replacement, at this point my fater was going ape at the dealership manager, he then read out a bit from a bit of paper, it went abit like this ' the seats are designed to take a load of an average sized person and heavy weights can split the element causing faliure' now i assume he ment a heavy person, and the fact that only my fahter and i have used the car with no passengers and it only used on the weekend, thats when my father went ape s*** on the manager and due to the fact the car was only about 3 months old. we have now a singed areement with mercedes benz croydon mamager that if this fault ever occurs it will be replaced free of charge. at no cost tous for a period of accepable product preformance. thats after my father a barrister, in civial and criminal law read him the riot act. so it goes to show that there is a design fault that mercedesknow about be prepared to argue your point

are all merc heated seats like this? Do I need to start saving up? My wife loves them in winter.......

I just hope I'm not tempting fate but Edna's seats have been absolutely fine and mine gets used all the time when it's cold:o Passenger side gets used less obviously. WHile I'm only fairly titchy "he" was a big bloke. Not a regular driver orpassenger in Edna but there nonetheless and as I said not a jot of a problem.

I think I read somewhere that it's the AMG covers that suffer with the problem most - just about every thread I've read has been an SLK32 (or C32) or it may just be that I've noticed because it's a 32.

Pammy - Fingers crossed you have a peach, and not a lemon!! ;)

The heated seats in my 1986 190E 2.3-16 still work fine.

They don't make 'em like they used to.....

my drivers side bottom pad has gone, just living with it really as the back is still good.

the bottom pad is not stiched, you can peel it away from the foam part ;)

you can buy the pad dirt cheap.

cheers.

I think you'll find that ones that fails the most are the leather cover with stitched in elements, some will fail sooner than others, however the SLK32 is a design which fails on a regular basis, this is a known fact from various forums I've been reading. That's why I went the route to install the seperate element pad from the non-AMG SLK seat which so far has'nt failed once.

is this the same in the R129 SL320 aswell, as i ahev one seat withe the bum working not the back and visa versa on the other seat.....
anyone know the part numbers for the cheaper pads? and how difficult is it to replace, anyone fancy doing a DIY write up????

Raj

From looking at the EPC catalogue below, an example of the part you require for the R129 bottom seat heater/cushion is no.20 which is £125, the seat back heater/cushion is no.75 at £136.

I got the price by inputting the part numbers onto the following Merc dealer website.

http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk/default.aspx

There are different variation of those parts, you will have to tell your dealer you VIN no. to order your correct one as prices will indeed vary depending on what upholstery you have, hope this helps.

WOW thats expensive, and will be even more expensive as my seats are the ltd edition version with perforated leather, i have seen it somewhere you can but i think its the w210 e class or the pads from the a class and wire them up ....

cant recall where i saw it and the pads were only 30 - 40 quid...

Raj

I suppose it's just a trial and error to see which pads will fit. I was lucky that the non-AMG SLK heater pads were more or less identical in shape and design as the original

i think with some of the mbs the pad is sewn onto the leather, im pretty sure thats how mine is hence the extortionate pricing.... like i said before you can buy the pads of another vehicle and adapt to fit yours at a much less cost..
