I thought I had better try and justify missing the GTG on Saturday....I was in Paris.

Here are some the shots I took on the Champs Elysees, where there are many car dealerships that have gone one step further to impress - apart from MB!

There are concept cars from Toyota and Renault, the most way out MB - a SLK320 CDI!

The MB Dealer frontage. Renault and Toyota had shop fronts twice the size - Renault bigger still actually (well it is France).

and from Renault....

The new Citroen dealership looked fantastic - but was undergoing some major work and not open.

Hope you enjoy.

Going off topic now - what is the obsession with Pairs and pharmacies? There seemed to be at least one on every parade of shops I saw on every street in all areas!

Handy, but odd!

Nice car shame about the colour

Hi Graham,

There's a reason for this - in France pharmacys are still heavily regulated, you can't buy any drugs in say a supermarket or a petrol station like you can in the UK (I found this out last summer). Because of the random French opening hours there is always demand...

How was the trip?

Good thread Graham.

I heard it mooted years ago that there would be a SL CDi, but it is still to show.
Just goes to show how liberal the French are compared to us Brits.

These showrooms are mainly for display puposes, for the prestige and presence of Paris most popular avenue.
As with regards to the "pharmacies", their number is strictly regulated and each shop has got an exclusive "territory". There is a rota between them as a 24h opening is required.

The SLK320CDi in the Champs Elysees Dealership is a concept car from last years Geneva Motor Show. The engine is based on the new 3.0 V6 turbo diesel but has 3 turbos instead of 1 and generates 286bhp.

At the same Geneva Motor Show MB showed a concept SL400CDi fitted with the new 4.0 V8 diesel engine.

Neither the SLK320CDi, the tri-turbo engine or the SL400CDi have been green-lighted for production but I know that all are theoretically possible except for the tri-turbo engine (on the grounds of cost to assemble).

Impressive stuff! Shame the tri turbo won't make it.

You just beat me to it :D

We were there yesterday and saw these lovely cars in the flesh. Good pictures. Nice thread.

I thought the Vision SLK 320CDI was a twin turbo, and the Vision SL400CDI was a triple turbo (or was it the other way round).

They would both be fantastic!

Here is the original press release:

http://www.daimlerchrysler.com/dcco...0-0-466468-0-0-243-7145-0-0-0-0-0-0-1,00.html

This presentation includes two fascinating sports car studies: an SLK 320 CDI with a 210-kW/286-hp triturbo diesel engine (630 Newton metres) and the Vision SL 400 CDI with a new eight-cylinder engine which is soon to enter series production at Mercedes-Benz. With an output of 231 kW/315 hp and a torque of 730 Newton metres, this future V8 engine is the world’s most powerful car diesel unit.

Silly of me to question you, really!

Thanks for clarifying that, DC Insider.

I'm sure a diesel SLK or SL would go well but I doubt the soundtrack would be up to much.

Also, wouldn't the heavier diesel engine at the front bugger up the weight distribution leading to iffy handling?

soundtrack..... heavier diesel engine
actually the V6 working (rather than idling) sounds fair. The engine is aluminium (and the gearbox case magnesium). Not sure how that relates by kg versus petrol - but it will have more torque than the petrol and have some weight in its favour being a V6 over a V8.
