smoking battery w124

Thanks for the replies..
When it happened I could see where the wires where touching and shorting off each other just below the battery.
Since then I've noticed most of the loom is very brittle , the ovp connector is slightly melted. .
Anyway it's with a fella who breaks mercs so he knows what he is doing , but it's not going to be cheap , since then I've found a black 124 for sale for 650 euro so maybe I'll buy that instead... swap a few parts.

Hey lads , ok... so after getting my car back after a few weeks of getting loom rewired, it's not idling very well but I took it off the mechanic anyway.
Now it drives ok but sounds like it's missing on one cylinder at idle and slightly backfires when Rev'd up.
Now every plug is sparking and I had the manifold and vacuums checked and was told there is no air leaks.
Also I changed the plugs again but the third cylinder plug is a bit sooty compared to the rest.
I also changed over the throttle body with my old one but it was no better , worse in fact... any ideas?
Thanks in advance

They'd be fairly old yeah.. but it is definitely firing on all cylinders.

It may get a spark at idle, but put the system under load and you'll get a weak spark.

Swap the HT lead to another cylinder and see if the misfire moves with it.

Haven't had a chance to try yet... I'll try today...

No.... it seems to be the same cylinder.. the third one.. the last guy did a compression test and said it had good results.

Ok, now try swapping the coils over. It does sound like an ignition problem to me.

Ok.. and do I have to re- arrange the leads accordingly?

Keep the leads in the positions they are, just swap the front coil for the rear coil. Hopefully the misfrire will move with the coil.

Is it an easy job.. they seem bit tricky to get at

Ok folks , where I'm at now...
Coils are ok, no vacuum leaks but the alternator is overcharging. It's up at 17 or so. I got another second hand one and it had the same reading , then we tried a reconditioned one with similar readings ,and then one fresh from a well running car and it had high readings in mine.
So question is , what would cause the alternator to overcharge? Would the OVP relay be the culprit still? This one is from another 4 cylinder coupe but not exactly sure what engine.
Cheers ...

The alternator regulator is what would cause overcharging.

The causes of over charging alternators are several. Since you have tried several alternators and experienced the same problem it points a common factor NOT DIRECTLY ALTERNATOR RELATED but in the accompanying circuitry. If for any reason the alternator regulator doesn't " see" the battery voltage it may fail to regulate the output. This can be due to several wiring faults --a battery problem or a problem in the alternator earth circuit leading back to the battery earth. Most likely problem would be a poor but not broken engine or battery to body earth strap. Try checking those first. Does the alternator charging light shine brightly on switch on and go out completely when the engine starts?

Which light exactly??? None of them are particularly bright

If memory serves correctly its the second warning light from the left on the strip of warning lights under the instrument cluster. It will have a battery symbol on it. It should come on when you switch on the ignition and shine steadily any sign of it flickering or dimming in brightness which would indicate a potential problem. It should of course go out when the engine starts.

No ,All seems well .nothing out of the ordinary
