smoking battery w124

try measuring the voltage drop with a DVM between the alternator earth connection [ alternator BODY? ] and the battery earth post--- voltage drop should not be more than about 0.25 volts.

OK so the earth strap is all good and my mechanic is none the wiser.
As I said , the loom was recently done so is it possible that maybe it is not rewired properly? And secondly are the OVP relays all the same on the 4 cylinder cars? I took this one off an unbadged car so it could be a 230 . Would this make a difference. ?? Thanks

I think your car is a 220e? If so you should have the relay with 1 blue 15 amp fuse in the top, not the older relay with the red 10 amp fuse.

Does it look the same as the one you removed?

The 220ce yeah.. I don't have the old one anymore so not quite sure . Same pins and it fit obviously . One said made in Hungary and other was Germany. Would the wrong one cause these symptoms?
Now that you mention it , I think one was blue and the other was red.

It might cause your symptoms but I cant be sure. The wrong relay will fit where the other came from, if you remove it can you see if there are 7 wires or 9 leading to it?

You may the correct part then, the old type have 7 pins and the new have 9.

Right but my question is , if this OVP is from a 230ce would the voltage be the same as my 220 , and therefore causing it to run rough? Thanks
