You'd expect better from an IT Consultant, but here goes.......

Wifey is in the process of setting up a new business from home. Domain is registered, website built, but how do I get the email sorted?

I'm running a BT Broadband connection provided by employer - no email addresses, no webspace. I want to be able to send / receive email from the new domain but not sure how to do this. Do I need an SMTP server running at home (not keen on this) or are there free/inexpensive ways of doing this?

I can get the emails sent to the domain, currently any sent out are via my gmail account (hosting service doesn't do the necessary) which means that the mails get tagged with the gmail address, not the business address.

Give me telematics and pay-as-u-drive any day! Plus less grief from wifey.

Many thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Had this problem when my employer recently provided me with a BT Broadband connection. Only way I could send via SMTP mail was to register a BT Openworld / Yahoo Mail account - costs £1.50 per month for up to 5 mail addresses. BTblock you from sending SMTP mail over any free mail services on BT Broadband line for some reason - unless somebody knows of one which works ! You can receive, but not send - very annoying !!

All ISPs (should) block outbound SMTP traffic if it didn't originate from within their network, otherwise they get used for relaying spam. BT also block SMTP from those who aren't mail subscribers, which is pretty rare, as pointed out by Sym. I managed to get a customer of mine to send mail through one of the other BT servers, if you check for all the different domains that BT owns, one of them is a bit slack and lets any BT hosts through it :) . Might be openworld, btclick or one of their other (older) brands of dialup account domains :) .

Use Gmail :)

Hi,
what I did was purchase my domain through ukplc

http://www.ukplc.com/

They have domain and email forwarding

I then got a gmail account. when you set it up it gives you a page with pop/smtp settings so that you can you outlook/opera/thunderbird to send and recieve your mail

When you set the mail up you set the reply to address as you wifes new business domain thus [email protected] THen log into ukplc and set up a mail relay to point [email protected] to [email protected]

now make sure that all automatic signatures are switched off (send some mails to and from the account ) and bobs your uncle an smtp mail server that workes anywhere in the world. no one ever knows you are using gmail unless they bother to read the mail routing info :D

If you need a gmail account PM me and I will send you an invite :D

I can host for you and sort out your with mail as many mail aliases as you like through my web server if you want. I dont think I could beat Maffs prices tbh but this stuff is all very cheap nowadays - like £10 a month or thereabouts depending on the content and usage. For that you get your site hosted, custom tools to manage your site and mail etc. Plus you get to call me instead of a call centre in india if you get a problem ;)

If you have already registered your domain, its just a matter of pointing the domain at your host and you'd be up and running very quickly....

One of servers is runing SBS 2003, through a BT Broadband line. I use no-ip.com to sort out the inbound mail, as I am on a DHCP IP address, and relay all mail through the BT SMTP Servers (and get free AV scanning). You just need to call them and confirm / prove that the domain is registered to you, and they will add you the their allowed list. See extract from their email:

Mr Leggatt,
Thank you for your update.

Please excuse my non-proffesional manner on the phone, believe it or not I am usually a lot more proficient.

Thge following domains have been added for relay through our server mail.btconnect.com and you should be able to send mail through the server once they have propogated (can take up to 24 hours).

gibberish.ltd.uk
gibberishlimited.com
gibberishlimited.co.uk
williamleggatt.co.uk

As for smtp authetication if you need to switch this on use your btconnect username and password for this and although we do not technically support exchange these link's may help switch on basic authentication:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[ln];265293 (not endorsed or affiliated with bt)

If in the future you need further assistance please feel free to search the knowledge base or email our BT Business Support team again at www.btbusinessoffice.com/help.

Kind regards,
