"performance chips" in Motronic engine management usually means altering the fuel maps, of which there are three: main, idle and full throttle. Full throttle is already ideal, not much to do there, idle is no use messing with. Main map can be leaned out a little in some areas, but to marginal gains as the system will adapt using the oxygen sensor(s).
The main change is to the main ignition advance map, where they usually advance the ignition by a few degrees almost all over. This yields a few Nm and thereby, for a given constant speed fuel economy improves, but not by a lot. On a good day, 5%
Is it worth it? For most people - No.
Oh but wait, they are also often able to remove the 250Km/h limiter, that might be worth it all to some.
