So, i bought the 2004 320 cdi avantgarde with amg kit that i was looking at - a couple of niggles, but it was too pretty to not buy it..

1) stone chips - i think the lady who drove it must have tailgated a gritter, the whole of the front including screen is marked - i have a friend who runs a bodyshop, so could get it refreshed, but if it's a common thing then i won't bother and just live with it!

2) mpg - not as good as i was expecting - on the drive home, 100 miles of motorway, 70mph, got 36.7mpg on the computer - our 200slk (08) - gets 35mpg on the same run - is this indicative of dirty filters, MAF, etc? What's notmal for a e320 cdi driven in a relaxed fashion?

3) radio popping - when the stereo is on radio, there is a popping noise - kinda every 2-3 seconds and the reception is pretty poor - seems to be intermittent and doesn't happen when a cd is in so i'm guessing tuner, amplifier, aerial? Got some searching to do on here to find the answer! Incidentally, at some point when i have the money then i'm going to upgrade to ntg2.5 head unit, so i guess that removes some of the problematic stereo components from the mix

4) valeo - it was manufactured 03/2004 so i think i'm safe, but the crimping did look straight rather than wavy - but i just couldn't find a sticker (i guess because it's underneath) - the air con unit, or whatever it is in front of the radiator is behr, so did they mix and match these with valeo? i'll get it checkout out at an indy as soon as i get chance just to be sure.

5) faint pinging sound - sounds like a spring - originally thought it might be the suspension, but on investigation it actually appears to be the drivers seat! it's very very feint, and only because i'm being super sensitive that i could hear it!

Other than that, it's amazing. It's a 6 year old car, and given what people say about quality concerns, there's barely a whisper or rattle from the cabin - i'd say much quieter and better put together than the creaking rattling e60 5's that i tested..

What temperature does the car run at? There are a few of use who have found that a jammed thermostat can harm fuel consumption. Should be getting closer to 40, if not above assuming that there was not much town traffic in the mix.

it was straight motorway the whole way - i'll check the temperature - what's 'normal'? i was a little surprised because we had an e280cdi sport as a courtesy car a few weeks back - got 45mpg out of that, again, on the same run - i'd expected the e320 to be similar because while bigger engine, the e280cdi had a dpf which is mmeant to hurt mpgs.

should be about 80 deg constant. Not too sure as this is a job I need to do myself.

The temp gauge on ours goes all over the place depending on speed, but very rarely gets that high.

sounds a nice car.....weres the pics?

pics coming when it stops raining :)

sounds like thermostat may be the issue - 20 minute drive down to the flat this morning - mostly 60mph - only got up to about 60deg - is it a big job?

I would check all the wear & tear engine bits as you've rightly said, MAF/filters (fuel&air)/plugs and maybe buy some injector cleaner additive and clear it out a bit. I would think that the E320cdi is capable of at least 45mpg on a very relaxed 70mph cruise. You could also plug it into a code reader and see if there's any persisting faults.

Thanks chaps - also funny to see how a lot of the cars i've had before are other people's current steeds - i had a 1998 540i years ago, loved the v8, back in the day petrol was only about 70-odd p a litre and i even used to get 32mpg out of it on a long run!

I'll take some pics of my new car to put on here - hopefully will get the radio issue sorted too.

Are the code scanners on ebay any good? Thanks for the thermostat guide..

Just sold my 04/04 E32CDI and from memory....

1 - cant say stone chips were an issue on mine, and it spent most of its life on motorways, dont know if the nano paint made a difference.

2 - Used to get 38-40 mpg crusing at 70 ish

4 - Mine was an April 04 build date and had Behr so fingeres crossd you will be ok.

Totally agree with the abscence of creaks and rattles, even at 6 years old mine seemed very well screwed together.

thanks - i'd expected to get about that, so will get the thermostat changed - £50 for parts and then i might take it to an indy to get them to do it, i don't really like touching engines. i think there's a chap on here who's local as we're near waterlooville and i think there's a guy up the road in horndean so i'll search for it!

Hi mate,

Nice car, very similar to what im looking at. Im chosen to downgrade due to funding, just sold my 730d sport, a nice car but only used to get 24mpg around town.

Can I ask what you paid for your car, I'll understand if you do not want to disclose.

ive seen a 04 e320cdi with the amg kit (well defo amg wheels), 105k on the clock, full MB history for just over £9k. Is the price about right?

Thanks
