Guys

I'm buying an SL500 from an indy dealer - hoping to pick the car up later this week.
It's his personal car and has his private plate on it, which he is having taken off.
So the V5 is at DVLA and will not be back until next week some time.

Dealer is (obviously) encouraging me to take the car this week. It will have had the reg transfer done but I won't have seen the new V5.
Among other things this means that I can't do a full, guaranteed HPI check (because you need the V5 document reference to do this properly).

Anyone know whether I could be at risk by taking the car before the new V5 comes back from DVLA?

Its not that I don't trust the seller, just that I will assume that if there is an unforeseeable problem he won't want anything to do with it....

Look forward to the usual expert advice being forthcoming.....and to once again spending a bit more time on this forum.

I am sure you can do a proper HPI with the registration and the VIN. If its not FULL then at least it will tell you for certain if it has been a write off or stolen / recovered or has finance outstanding.

I don't necessarily see your predicament as been uneccessarily risky provided the trader is reputable.

I've no specific concerns over the dealer being reputable.
But how reliable is any dealer once cash has changed hands in his direction?!

Could you not put a clause in the receipt ..... ?

hi . i been in that situation and lost. its easier to hold on to your money until you have checked everything than to try and get it back if something goes wrong.a genuine dealer will be prepared to wait for all paper work to be correct.if you are in a hurry (understandably) get the local police to check the car.

good luck

Abby

DVLA office you can get the V5 on same day

Just a note I sent of a V5 for the same purpose removal of number plate, and I think he is being very optimistic for it to be turned around in 2 weeks, I have been waiting 3 weeks and have only had confirmation of the changes and a new tax disc returned to me. In the return letter it says V5 will follow and can take up to 4 weeks...

Just politely inform him that the transaction will be completed only when he can hand over the car and V5 together!!

you are perfectly fine on this.

Just do an HPI with the current reg..

When the transfer is complete he will be able to pass on amended green slip and new MOT and DVLA yellow letter.

Then the V5 will follow to him, normally takes 2-3 weeks which he will then need to fill in and send off with your details or can send to you to fill in..
