Some Pr**k hit my Mercedes 300CE 24V

Next time I'm going to take the keys of driver, no matter what.
An incredibly reckless and stupid thing to do. A very smart way to get the situation to escalate and descend into violence.

As other people have said - do the simple things like get a number plate and details of any witnesses.

To be honest I would hardly imagine the Police are going to get involved over a £20 bit of damage. Claiming on his insurance or yours will cost far more than £20..... that cost has to be met somewhere.... and that is yet another reason for insurance costs rising.

Suck it up, put it down to a bad experience and move on with your life. The way you are putting things i can see violence occuring should you ever meet this character again, you have no witnesses to the original incident and if you do have a coming together phsyically the other chap would get away with claiming an unprovoked attack by you.

Move on with your life.

even if it doesn't get violent (which it most probably would), the moment you touch/attempt to remove his (or her) keys it becomes a lot more serious. Attempted theft, hijacking, assualt all spring to mind and I'm sure the Police will be very interested then.

I think you've over estimated the costs as well, the W124 chrome grille strips are only about £1.50 each (£11 for a set of 7) and a new pair of plates cost us £14 from the dealer so if you are lucky you'll get away with less than a tenner.

The RAC site is unreliable for details, it once claimed I drove a Mazda (It was a Honda!)

Try the OFFICAL DVLA site

I think the RAC site is just about better than nothing. :) The DVLA requires the right make of vehicle otherwise it sometimes draws a blank. You pays your money and takes your choice (not pay your money literally)

It must be a very sad thing if the Police are not interested in a hit and run accident simply because of cost! Wher do they draw the line? £50, £100??

It is quite possible the offender has no insurance etc, but I totally agree about the less than correct attitude shown by the innocent victim.

Chip???? California Highway Patrol!

Guys, your right. I'm just going get it fixed for £20 and cut my loses.

I'm lucky in the sence its only £20.

And I need to change my attitude towards crabbing the key idea as that too is a criminal offence.

The thing is I'm not really bothered about the £20 and putting my time to fix the problem, but its the pain that its caised me.

I have tried to be as carefully as I can but I can't control the other drivers who want to hit into me.

This time round I'll have to learn my lesson.

All I can say is I hope this kind of thing doesn't happen to any of you guys. BE CAREFULL

When a similar incident happened to my sister a number of years ago ( a driver reversing out of a space hit her car ) she just left her car across the space , blocking him in until the police arrived as the other person refused to give details .

Obviously you do have to use a degree of 'common sense' and 'size up' the other person , but if they have damaged property or you have reason to suspect they are , for example , drunk in charge of a motor vehicle then any citizen is legally entitled to perform a 'citizen's arrest' and detain someone until the police arrive - this could include confiscating car keys or blocking the escape of a vehicle .

The above is all well and good if done at the time and place of an incident , but it would be an entirely different matter if you tried it at the roadside having recognised 'the guy who hit your car a couple of weeks earlier' ; you would have a difficult burden of proof to meet .

The market rate is now £25 for a set of Stealer number plates. If your're lucky then for around £20 (plus postage/packaging) a set of plates can be had on line but they are off course advertised as "show plates" to by pass the legislations of having to produce the relevant documentation.

I wasn't just picking prices out of the ether :) We've bought two pairs in the last month, one with the GB marking and one without both from the same dealers priced at £13.75 per pair.

licence plates were free from my stealership, I've had a set made up for both MBs I've owned. Imagine paying for them!

I guess Halfords have a standard price that they charge in all their branches , I seem to remember paying about £15 there for a pair of 'standard' ones about a year ago .

Sorry to hear about your problem. Hope you get it sorted cheaply.

On a different note: as my mothertongue is German I had never heard the word 'chip' in this context meaning 'made off surrepticiously'. I even looked in the dictionary but no mention of it in the context you're using it. Is it some local slang? ;) :)

Regards
Karl

The word chip is a local slang which I use.

Chip means go
Chipped means gone  :bannana:

Stupid word if you ask me!

Even if you had got the registration I doubt anything would have happened. You'd need witnesses for a start. I was forced off of the road once - got the details and witnesses before he drove off - the Police wrote to the guy's mum as it was her car but basically she didn't reply - that was it - they weren't interested - I gave all the details to the insurance company as they wanted to try and recoup money themselves.
