While driving along A13 toward London, do you guys noticed that there are rows of detectors mounted above the carriageway just before the GATSO speed camera in the area just before Dagenham and Barking. There are similar detectors on the other side away from London. Can you guys tell me what these are?

The cameras are numberplate recognition cameras. They are similar to those used in averahe speed camera installations. But here, all they do is read your number plate as you enter London's new Low Emission Zone.

Your number plate is checked against the DVLA database. If your vehicle is one that qualifies for the Low Emission Zone charge, you have to pay £200 for each 24 hour period you are in London's LEZ area.

It doesn't apply to cars or small vans, at least not yet. The idea is to restrict large diesel powered vehicles entering London to those that comply with the latest, most stringent exhaust emissions legislation.

In some mainland European cities, the LEZ has been extended to diesel cars, and only those that comply with the latest Euro 4 emissions requirements are allowed in. The intention there is to keep oxides of nitrogen to a minimum.

Oxides of nitrogen are strongly associated with respiratory problems (including asthma) and are also more powerful greenhouse gases than CO2.

Edit: Just checked the LEZ, crikey! I thought it was the same as the Congestion Charge. Thankfully my W215 is not affected.

The thin end of the wedge, my friend...

It started in February 2008 for A12 and A23 entering London after M25.

My car was registered in UK in 1997 then I changed to one of these cherished Northern Ireland number plate DEZ... and the compliance web link tells me it couldn't find my registration. What should I do other then to send an email to tfl?

So, what's the relationship between this and the C02 charging zone, previously known as the congestion charging zone?
