Speed Cameras, Heads Up !!!

Even doing "acceptable" speeds above the limit (80mph on a motorway) adds up for me. 140 miles each way, at 70mph is 2hours. At 80mph it's 1hr45min.

Over a week, that's 2.5 hours... doesn't seem like much, but that's an extra work day a month that saved by doing a speed that, although "illegal", most consider reasonable...

M.

I totally agree and if you are the consultant type whose business is built on selling time then it can add up to a significant amount of cash over a relatively short period.

Not heard anything recently, I assume the 80mph proposal for the motorways has died the death.

Rant over but the UK has a lot to learn about traffic flow

Indeed.

And perhaps Germany might learn from the UK about reducing road casualties.

My biggest gripe about travelling by road in the UK outside of Scotland is that the capacity of the motorways is insufficient peak times. Eg. M6 which can make journey times indeterminate. Autobahn speeds won't fix that.

And my second biggest gripe about driving south of the border is how slowly people seem to drive in the country such as in Hants and Wilts - at least when I'm trying to get about. Again autobahn speeds won't fix that.

I always use the limit +10% rule, keeps you within the ACPO guidelines and lets you glide past lesser mortals afraid to do the true speed not the one indicated on thier speedos (although why they should wear swimming trunks in the car....? :D ) , but since the proliferation of satnavs most people know the true speed anyway, shame really but often they are still wary of exceeding it.

Because in the country there is a code, animals take priority horses, deer etc
and we love slowing impatient drivers down:D

Having seen the way some of the slower drivers deal with horses there might be a code for some of us - but its clearly not a factor in their approach.

I drive from the Midlands to Sussex and back weekly, roughly 470 miles. I set the cruise control to 80 which is spot on in the SL and about 77 in the SE.
Frankly it's difficult, 5 mph less and I'm a menace, 5 to 10 mph more I'm keeping up with the rest and not causing a problem.
From an economy position I'd love to drive at 68, I really wouldn't lose that much time but
I'm sure I'd cause issues for everyone else on the M6/M42/M40/M25.
Well, perhaps not the M25.

What's the story on the M1 near Nottingham. There are camera warning signs and cameras on the overhead gantries, but about 50% of drivers ignore them and drive at 80 - 90 mph. I drove to MIRA at Nuneaton on Saturday and wasn't sure if the cameras were active or not.

I believe they are only active while the signs are on, and have I guess tested this. I tend not to push my luck too much though....

^ Hope you're right because to be honest, I drove faster in the 124 on the M1 than I did in a GT3 and a GTR on the MIRA track. :ban:

M1 northbound roadworks J29 to J31.

I can confirm that the 50mph average speed cameras are working.

NIP at 56mph.

Driver awareness course to be taken.

How do we know this isn't propaganda?...perhaps when the next scum biker gets done when rushing to help an old lady with her kittens, cross the road 20 miles away.

scum biker ???? Hmmmmmmm:mad:

David you are spot on, those cameras on the M1 from Nottingham to South Normanton are active, but as you say only when the signs are on & indicating the speed you should be going... I was always unsure when they were active but that was till i have spoken to people who have got caught out by them.
