Out of the 25 or so HGV drivers working for me I would say 85-90% have points. And this is the sad fact that there are very few high mileage drivers without any points.

:bannana: :bannana: never been caught - and hope to stay that way :p

I try to be sensible and extremely observant and it's worked up to now.

German autobahns, raise the speed limit in UK? No, you must be crazy.
I lived in Germany for 5 years and now live in adjoining Luxembourg. We are often in Germany and it is not at all unusual to see a convoy of cars nose to tail at over 200kph. Having seen the consequences of this with burnt out wrecks littering the autobahn in a 200 metre stretch, one has no doubt that speed kills. Germany has an accident rate twice that of UK. Their drivers are some of the most disciplined in Europe but they drive at high speed.
There was a programme on the Beeb a couple of years back that demonstrated unequivocally that speed kills, it is the single biggest ingredient for accidents. Not only that they demonstrated that skill is not a factor as racing drivers have the highest on road accident record of all.
And for the record 40 years of driving and no speeding tickets.

Guess I have to agree with you that 'speed' kills, on the basis that 2 static objects are unlikely to collide with each other! The question is, what is 'excessive speed'? Do we go back to having someone walking in front of the car at 3mph with a red flag? Do we say that 30 is more than fast enough, in which case no one will ever get where they need to be on time? Is a 70mph limit still valid, considering that it was imposed over 30 years ago when cars were nowhere near as capable dynamically?

Your comment regarding racing drivers and skill not being a factor is not really in line with whats being said - racing drivers might well have exceptional car control, but they are accustomed to driving right on the limit (where even gifted ones like Schumacher get it wrong at times) and to driving aggressively. If anything, they would be MORE likely to crash because of these factors, and that the common sense of not driving on public roads as if they were a race track is contradictory to their everyday job...

Personally, I still believe that more accidents could have been avoided if reckless driving was tackled instead of focusing on the speed that the vehicle was travelling at. I do accept that it is quite probable that fewer people would be killed if cars were doing 50mph instead of 70mph, however even fewer people would be killed in accidents if they didn't travel on the roads at all, so attempting to tackle this problem in this manner seems a bit flawed IMHO

Why does everyone have a horror story of one sort of another? (Me too :P)

Been stopped by the police doing 70-ish (margin of 15mph) on the A4 (the part that goes up on the ramp, just before it becomes the M4)... They were quite alternative... maybe because it was 4am in the morning, maybe because they were in an unmarked car, maybe because they never saw a 18(at the time) year old kid with Back blaring through the sound system... They pulled me over... in the middle of the road, blocking both carriageways, rolled down the window, announced it was a 40mph speed limit area and sped off... lol

The best (not for speeding, but amazingly funny anyways) was when I was bringing the equipment for my paintball clubs meet to the site. I had something like 30 kits (guns, gas, ammunition, loaders, etc) in boxes. My tax disk had fallen off, and the only place I had some tape was in a box with 30 barrels... As if this wasn't enough, the sidewalk had been cordoned off and there were between 50 and 100 cops waiting there (I'm not sure if they were trainees or what, but they were LOTS, a whole sidewalk cordoned off just for them). They didn't seem to appreciate the idea that I had a box full of barrels and suddenly grew quite tense and stopped joking until I opened the other boxes and showed them that they were only paintball markers... After which I was let off without any worries (so class, if you stop a person with boxes of weapons, what do we do? calmy put away our batons and let him go :P)
Spinal
p.s. I must admit that I have nothing against the police but praise, whenever I called them, they came immediately and whenever I've been stopped its been very professionally. If only more countries had cops like the british...

I'll be the odd ball. Speed kills is a pointless political nonsense.

The majority of fatal accidents in this country occur at speeds of less than 30mph!!!!!! That is a statistical fact which both the government and Police tend NOT to publicise.

The safest roads are motorways, the most dangerous are statistically where there are pedestrians where there is a 30mph speed limit and the vehicle involved was not breaking this limit. So speed camera's are of no use in these cases.

You get so called experts saying that the greatest cause of accidents is down to excess speed!!! However I would say the greatest cause of 'accidents\collisions' is down to DRIVER ERROR Unfortunately that is not fashionable.

It is very rare for the cause of an aircraft incident to be recorded as 'excess speed', more likely to be 'pilot error'.

I have not been driving for several years, but voted on behalf of 'she that must be obeyed'. :) No points, for her no cautions, in fact she is quite a law abiding person apart from motorway driving. :) :)

(Sorry for going off topic)

Was on a cold morning some twelve years ago I got an sp30,I think I was doing 53 in a 30 zone at 6.30 am caught by a lone copper with a gun.The road was a duel carrage way as well :(

In this country I have been done for nothing, at home in Oz my record is 184kmh in a 110kmh zone - pulled over by two cops with guns drawn.

Busted for doing 96 in a 70 zone...... A30 in Devon just before the Merrymeet roundabout....

Nice police, had a good chat with them, very friendly, ended up with 3 points and a ....... drum roll......... £30 fine !!

good few years ago now, so points are gone and licence is clean again !

Observant maybe, sensible? I will leave the question open :D

speeding

Its clearly a case of luck that not more of us have been done for speeding, we all do it at some point...the message that the government is trying to get across is slow down which in modem cars and vans ( 1.9 cdti vaxhaul vervaro. very quick) is harder than you imagine, but also appropriate speeds out side schools in town centres ...we all now where the pointless speed limits are .it would be better if we looked at the antiquated laws that govern the speed limits if we raised the limit on motorways between certain times as a start it would prove beneficial in 2 ways you to reach your destination in a reasonable time while maintaining a healthy speed..of say 90mph and because you would not be speeding under my law you would relax and drive safer...and not be looking out for speed traps, its not fast if you crash at 70 or 90 I can not see the difference and are high speed crashes that common probably % wise a certain fatality..but we do get that at lower speeds...most seam to be in car parks or junctions ...a bit off topic but still relevant

Yep, 62 in 50 mph zone, J27 M25 2003 during road-widening, laughing & joking with new customer on board & got flashed by temporary camera. £60 fine, 3 points, took a year to pay cos I "couldn't find my driving licence" and "had moved house" (both true). Paid online to Colchester nick, eerie!

Paranoia is just in your imagination

I've collected a couple of Sp30s over the past 35 years ('87, '96) and on each occasion a 'victim' of over-zealous cops - yes, I would say that.
But down in the Scottish Borders are some of the UK's best and quietest roads which make motoring still a pleasure. The last thing you want are two shady characters eating Yorkies whilst sitting in a white Vauxhall Senator tucked up a farm track! Failed the observancy test there, then.
Where were they in 1985 when, on the M8 (and purely for research purposes) I confirmed the owner's manual data that the turbo wastegate and the rev limiter on a SAAB 900S Turbo-16 both cut in at exactly 5800 rpm in 5th?

If I may go off on a tangent - although the topic is still stealth taxes, the following appeared in 'The Scotsman' (a bit of social comment here???)

Driving German is the ticket to a fine.

Luxury German cars are twice as likely to end up with a parking ticket on the windscreen as cheaper vehicles, according to figures from Scotland’s biggest cities. In Glasgow and Edinburgh, makes such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen are given parking fines out of proportion to their numbers on the road.
While some will jump to the conclusion that drivers of swanky and expensive German motors are more likely to risk parking illegally, others might suggest the prestigious marques are being targeted by jealous traffic wardens.
Edinburgh and Glasgow councils provided a detailed breakdown of the percentage of all parking fines handed out to drivers of every make of car. These numbers were compared with DVLA statistics to create a league table of the most ‘over-ticketed’ cars.
Top spot goes to Mercedes, whose cars make up fewer than 2.8% of all vehicles on the road but get 5.7% of the city’s tickets. Second is Audi owners, who have 2% of all cars but 3.2% of tickets, third is Volkswagen at 6.6% of all cars and 9.5% of tickets, and fourth is BMW at 3.4% of all cars and 4.7% of Edinburgh’s tickets.
The figures also reveal the apparently most law-abiding - or perhaps overlooked - motorists in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Fords, according to the DVLA, account for 17.3% of all cars on the roads but in Edinburgh they get 14% of tickets and in Glasgow 13%. Rover owners make up 5.5% of all cars but get under 3% of tickets in the two cities.
While disgruntled luxury car drivers may mutter that they are the victims of a class war waged by wardens who love to target motors they cannot afford to buy, a leading Scottish psychologist believes such drivers are more inclined to take risks and will regard a parking ticket as little more than an occupational hazard.
"An owner of an expensive car is more likely to take the risk because they will be more able to afford the parking fine.
Former Conservative MSP Nick Johnson, who is both a driver and a seller of Mercedes cars, admitted: "I think there is a certain arrogance attached to owning an upmarket car.
A spokesman for Mercedes-Benz, who added that he drives one and has never received a parking ticket, said: "We encourage our drivers to stick to the law, which is why some of our cars include speed limiters. Of course our cars have a kerbside appeal, which is why they will attract more attention."

...I've never had a parking ticket...

I have not been done yet one or two flashes but nothing followed, to all that want higher speed limits (I,m one) are kidding themselves, with the steady increase in traffic, speed limits are likely to drop not go up.

gary Oh happy day

Final score 2/3rds of us have been done!
