I'm currently in process of colour coding my SEC split rims. I sold the last set of rims i had due to cracking between the centre bore and bolt holes, a common prob of these AMG 3 piece wheels. Managed to find a set of split rims in Germany, with brand new polished lips, and all brand new original OZ 10.9 strength fasteners! Also the wheels are one of the last sets manufactured, a 1996 year build. These aren't as prone to the cracked faces as some of the earlier ones. The faces had a few scratches on them so i thought might as well colour code them as i love the loook of black centres on a black car.

Purchased the tools to undo the fasteners from Germnay, cost £50 for what are essentially 2 sockets  . Splitting them down was actually easier than i thought, took just over an hour.

Tools required are:

The wheels as they are:

1. Indo the bolts, just a few turns as the fastener will spin on the other end.

2. Once you've undone the bolts slightly, undo the bolts by holding one end of the bolt and undo the fastener:

3. Once the bolts are removed use a hammer to gently knock the face downwards (use a wooden block to prevent damage to the face!):

I now have a nice set of wheels sitting in my lounge:

I will need a torque wrench to reassemble the wheels. Does anyone know what torque they should be tightened to? I have been told 14lbs but would like to reconfirm. Also when i reassemble the wheels should i tighten the bolts on opposite ends i.e diagonally accross?

Thanks for your help!

IMO opinion colour coding your beautiful wheels will spoil them (especially as they are OEM 3 Piece wheels...). They look fantastic in their original silver finish.

Remember, these wheels are very expensive and IF you do no like the black colour coding finish then what are you going to do then?

Period AMG wheels on the W126 came colour coded as standard. To be honest i've always liked colour coded wheels on old skool MBs. I had my W107 SL with black wheels, loved the look. I know what the car will look like as i've seen a black SEC with colour coded wheels and its what i want. :)

Fair enough... - Good luck :)

PS. I loved the way that the car looked at the last GTG.

Wait till you see at the next one! I have a serious mod coming up, should be done withing the next 6-8 weeks. Just need to rectify a small niggle in my steering box, bought a new one from ECP and its gone faulty already! As soon as thats done i will get started.

I bet its the interior...? :D ;)

We shall wait and see. I've actually got a few mods to do, will hopefully get enought time to finish them all. Its been a year since i've bought it, haven't done 500 miles on it yet! Spent approx 11 months off the road, so am desperately trying to have it completed ASAP.

Colour coded centres rule......

But i would say that wouldn't I .......

The furnishings in your workshop are amazing. I bet that persian rug is great for soaking up any spilt oil:D

Mate, I just hope your interior mods include a persian rug dashboard cover. Now that would look really special.

I agree the old skool MBs look good with colour coded wheels especially on SECs - make sure you post pics once there done !- I'm concerned that my splits are not cracked as you mentioned - would it be quite visable to check or would it be a hair line type of crack ? please let me know what i should look for and advise what precautions to take care of these type of wheels - thanks

Check the bolt holes for small hairline cracks on the bore side. They are prone to cracking due to over torquing the wheel bolts. If your tyre shop uses an impact compressor wrench then you will 99% damage the wheels. Its ok to use to remove wheel bolts using them but they must be hand tightened and torqued to the correct setting.

Have a look at the attached pic. The crack will start from the inside of the bolt holes first and makes its way to the face and then down to the bore. DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE IF YOU HAVE THESE CRACKS AS IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

Its a common problem that is acknowledged by OZ, the manufacturer of these wheels. In Germany the defective faces were replaced FOC for a number of years, as long as the wheels were sent to AMG Germany. Unfortunately no such scheme was done here in the UK. Replacement faces are extremely rare to find these days, i know OZ italy still have new ones but the don't supply them as parts. I purchased 2 spare wheels with good faces, just in case!

Thats a tad extreme, but what about chopping the rug for use as overmats! :D
