Splitting my AMG 3 piece wheels

I've always fancied AMG splitties for my SL, you've put me off now! Don't fancy paying £££ for a set only to have them crack a year later!

I didn't know about this issue. Presumably a devious seller could 'colour code' the centres to hide cracking ...

Thats the prob i had with my first set. They had been refurbed when i bought them. I always hand tighten the wheels but after 500 miles i had a small crack appear in one of the wheels.

They are a headache, and a nightmare to keep clean, but they are the best looking wheel for a W126. Personally i would fit the 18" AMG 2 piece wheel. I think it suits the SL better as the 3 piece ones make the car look dated.

These ones?

Yep they're the ones. Easy to keep clean and non of the maintenance issues of the 3 piece wheels.

I don't drive the SEC alot, approx 1k a yr max, and it won't be driven in the rain/snow so its not a big issue for me.

I only average 2-3k miles a year in the SL. The Ceginus (AKA "Evolution", "Mille Miglia", etc.) 17" wheels I have on now are very easy to keep clean and are quite unusual, but I do like those 2-piece AMGs ...

I personally think the car will look alot better with the AMG 2pc wheels. 17 inch wheels on the SL aren't quite big enough and don't fill the arches enough.

The only other probs with the split rims are the unlacquered polished lips. Literally the wheel has to be washed regurarly to maintain the shine and every few weeks you have to use autosol to keep them gleaming. The fiddly bit is cleaning between the 35+ small bolts, a nightmare for your fingers!

Just did a few searches ... those AMG 2-pieces with tyres would set me back around £3,500 bought new!

£1k should buy a mint set, just keep an eye on ebay. I'll let you know if anything pops up.

AMG 3 Piece alloys are the best and worth the expense IMO.

If you’re going to spend £3K plus on alloys then the Brabus ones are fantastic and that little bit more “exclusive” opposed to the two piece AMG wheels. I personally would opt for Brabus wheels IF you’re not going to get the AMG 3 piece wheels.

IMHO there is no Brabus wheel that will compliment the shape of the R129 as well as the AMG 2pc wheels.

The 3pc wheels look nice on the W126s but are a bit too old looking for the R129. I have some pics of the SL with the 2 pc and 3 pc wheels. Will post them for comparison later on.

The R129 does look dated now so I do appreciate that the choice of alloys is restricted but think that the following Brabus wheels would look good:

All the above are 2 piece wheels and OEM MB centre caps are a perfect fit as well as the Brabus ones.

They are similar to the BBS wheels as fitted to the 2001 models - though certainly not as nice:

AMG styling IVs are copies of Brabus wheels and look good - though I don't like modified R129s really.

Personally, I prefer the Brabus ones as they look better and more sportier and have a nicer dish around the rim. OEM MB centre caps fit Brabus wheels nicely as well if looking for the orignal look.

To me the Brabus wheels just look like old skool AMG wheels and hance dated.

Thanks for the advise and picture much appreciated KLP 92 - I will check each alloy over the weekend.

I agree, seen them on a SL before and wouldn't buy them! I would stick with your design or the AMG one.
