Sprintbooster problem

Hi

Fitted a Sprintbooster today and:

1) It does 'what it says on the tin' - brilliant.

2) The car will not tickover properly. Continually 'hunting' and trying to stall at idle. When I drive the car it is fine.
I removed it and the car idle is perfect.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks

Are you sure its plugged fully in because I've never heard of that problem on any SB before.

Yes it's definately fully plugged in cos it works.

Only problem is tickover

Try doing a gearbox reset with the SB fitted and see if that helps.

Ive had 2 of these, one on a 203 and now on a 211 and not a single glitch from either.

Hi Jaymanek,
Thaks for the link but I am not using Carsoft.

Hi Andy,
Good idea, I did a reset and drove the car about 10 miles before installing SB but hadn't thought of doing one with it fitted.

Sorry, I made a possible large omission:

With SB plugged in, the engine management icon in the rev. counter head goes on, when SB disconnected it goes out.

Thanks for all help.
Hi again Andy,

Reset with SB does not make any difference

I'd get the unit replaced then, its gotta be dodgy if its tripping a CEL

Agree, faulty unit.

Thanks Guys, great to get 2nd opinions.

Will return the unit this morning. BTW what's a CEL? Please don't laugh!!!

I think the booster is causing the ECU to see implausible throttle position at idle, maybe a boosted signal.?

The throttle pot should be on the idle contact at idle, but I suspect the ECU is being fed a open throttle signal as well by the booster.

I'll be interested to see what happens with another unit as these don't seem to work on diesels either.

More problems!
Removed the SB and rushed to the Post Office in my wife's car so I could catch the 12 noon collection.
When I got back, I refitted the MB connecter and now the car will not idle properly and the Engine Management light will not go out- previously it went back to perfect idle and the light went out.
Could the defective SB have triggered something in the electronics?
The SB is an expensive enough piece of kit and I hope that I'm not going to have to get something reset at a dealers - goodness knows what that would cost.
I'm totally new to Mercedes and the electronics, in fact I am now left wondering should I risk fitting another SB, great job though it is.

Getting a bit worried now, any brainwaves gratefully accepted!!!

We had someone else who had problems after a SB fitment. I'll do a search...

When you connect anything to the electronics you have the chance for damage but considering this device only changes the potentiometer voltages that the ECU see's i doubt it's done anything permanent.

Drive the car for a little while and see if you can drive cycle the CEL out, if you can't then try an OBD2 tester but these are very limited in what they can see/do so if it can't find the fault its dealer/indy time.

Again I'd suggest you send the unit back for replacement/refund and that if you connect something to the car that causes the CEL to illuminate you disconnect it ASAP.

Driven about 40 miles but light still on and lumpy tickover.
Anybody know what equipment is required to reset it and approx how much does it costs.
I have no doubt that the SB caused it, as it happened immedistely SB was plugged in.

Thanks for your help.

I wonder whether disconnecting the battery and leaving it overnight would clear it??

If you do, please take care as I've heard that disconnecting and reconnecting the battery on modern MBs can cause damage to allsorts of electrickery.

Best seek advice from more knowledgable forum members first!!

How do I get it turned of FOC?

That would depend on the cause. Some forum member much more knowledgeable than I am in this domain will no doubt have some good suggestions.

The CEL usually indicates something with the engine electronics out of kilter or an emissions based problem (of course one can be caused by the other).

As you say it appeared just after fitting the SB, it's probably not a bad guess that some electronic components has been put out of its normal operation condition? No doubt, one of the forum's specialists will be round with a more useful suggestion!
