Hi,

read a lot here about the affect on petrol engines - does it perform same trickery on diesels  - I have 05 163 ML 270 :o

any feedback would be appreciated..

Stuart

Hi,
My understanding of the sprintbooster mod is as long as you have an electronic throttle it will work.

There are a couple of members who had one on a diesel.
Search sprintbooster and have a look in the main threads.;)

Rather than a SB a tuning box is probably going to be better for a diesel.

I believe you know what you're talking about from reading your responses to other peoples issues - do you or anyone recommend any particular type - I am totally maxed out reading all the hype and do not want to overstress the motor / injection pump

any thoughts ??

Thanks
Stuart

Yep.

Don't do it then....

They all work on increasing rail pressure. This increases wear on the pump and injectors and causes EGT to rocket.

Though there is one approved box for the MB in Holland in the workshop manuals their words are exactly as dieselman said, and they advise you to remove it, if fitted

Thing to remember of course is that they only increase the wear when you're using the extra power, so if you're doing a trackday it could be a bad idea, or a mad balls-to-the-wall autobahn run. For additional overtaking grunt we are talking a few seconds of additional stress at a time - yes it is extra wear but not a huge amount.

I'd have one, but I keep spending my spare money on other stuff (often diesel...) instead of bringing my next speeding ticket a little closer.

Given that the inject more fuel all of the time and run at higher rail pressure they cause high EGT and wear all the time.

The economy benefits are due to running in higher gears due to the additonal torque being generated per firing stroke.

All of the time? If they did that the car would just run away - sure if the box is just fooling the system all the time (some just intercept the rail pressure sensor don't they) then yes I can understand that, but others work with the injection timing. I don't think they're all the same.

As only certain parameters can be changed, the higher pressure remains. In the olden day you could fit new cam shafts etc, sure the car was faster, but a pig around town I could chip my 113 engine to get a bit more out of it, but then I would need 98 ron + to drive it, so not for me.

Back onto the original question I see that it is advertised for diesels, but then if I was selling them I might say the same, it does need the coments from a diesel owner who has fitted one

All the add on boxes adjust rail pressure to inject more fuel. They don't alter timing at all.

The engine won't run away because the accellerator pedal position is governing the revs.

When driving this is performed by the driver and at idle the base idle speed is used.

They increase torque by increasing the amount of fuel sprayed in which in turn alters the amount of fuel in the air fuel ratio. This pushes up EGT and loads the pump more..

You forgot the gearbox! They die if you use the torque on a regular basis

I see you have had your 250 est superchipped - any issues ??
