Investigating a "99" 5 cylinder OM602 turbo diesel,runs and idles perfectly
but smokes(blueish/white),and clouds of it.First thoughts turbo issue,so removed the turbo bypassed the oil supply and ran it,still smokes from the open manifold
and drips oil.No coolant/oil transfer evident or over heating.

Next step compression test, but have been wondering if exhaust valve seals could be the cause,it is consuming a lot of oil,any thoughts opinions welcome.

I have a E210 LHD with the same OM602 engine. Had the same problem twice in my 6yrs of owning the car. But along with the clouds of smoke the performance was poor. Both times it was #1 injector. It has a coil inside that sends a signal to the ECU for timing. Garages diagnosed turbo & other engine issues but it was only the injector.
Star will confirm if its the injector.

Just to close, Head gasket failure between cylinder 1 and the chainway also blown
between 1&2.

Very common. Sorry I didn't see this earlier. The 2.5 lump doesn't suffer, but when they bored it out to 2.9 for the sprinter the gasket becomes a bit too thin.
