Staggered wheels why are rear tyres so expensive

I'm considering replacing all 4 tyres on my CLK 280. Front tyres are 205/55/16 and rears 225/50/16.

My usual source for tyres are Michelin from Costco, they will supply and fit the front tyres but not the rears. I can get rear tyres from elsewhere but they are almost twice the price of the fronts which is bonkers for such a small increase in size.

So question is why are the rear tyres so expensive and can anyone recommend an alternative to Michelins where both sizes are a reasonable price?

Check out Goodyear tyres in the sizes you require from Asda tyrea.
The price you see is what you pay, no extras and you choose your local fitter from a list.

Just checked and the same problem, they will supply Goodyear tyres for the front 205/55/16 but rears (225/50/16) not available.
It looks like it would be easier to change to 17" wheels.

What tyres, apart from MIchelins, are actually available in those sizes?

Have you tried Black Circles and Camskill?

It looks like only the Avon ZV7's are available in both sizes at a reasonable cost

Avon Zv7 £71. Best I can find

Unit numbers, 205/55/16 tyres is a very common and standard to many cars.
JBO52 try a different supplier CLK on second set of Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres 205/55/16 and 225/50/16

What is the load rating for the tyres?

Also, I found that Dunlop Sport BluResponse are generally very keenly prices (and they are good tyres, too, I bought a few sets for various cars).

not a Costco member and needed to order rear tyres for my AMG GT yesterday (and the OP thinks his tyres are expensive 😂)

interestingly KwikFit quoting cheaper prices than Black Circles and they are doing 10% discount on that lower price when you buy 2 Michelins - saved nearly £100 over Black Circles prices - didn’t expect that

Camskill seem to list both sizes but I presume they are supply only?
Correct but if you don't fancy using a local tyre fitter then I use Camskill as a benchmark for prices and to gather an idea of what make of tyre to then search for.

As an Avon stockist our Indie sells plenty of ZV7’s with never a complaint.
Always check a local Indie for price, as an all in price comparison.

I've fitted Contis front and rear to the E280 CDI Sports Estate in the past 12 months.
They are not cheap tyres, but I was not particularly shocked at the price of the larger rear tyres.
Have lost the invoice ... Sorry.
