I have a question - well two actually

Roughly how much does a starter motor cost (I'm assuming that the costs are not dissimilar for different models).

And roughly how long do you think one should last?

£50-£100 (GSF are quite handy for prices)

5-10 years (my guess)

Thanks. I'm just after an opinion as to what's reasonable.

There will reconditioning ones and entirely new ones at different prices. The recon ones are exchange of course. Quite often its the pre-engage solenoid/contacts rather than the actual motor. A good Bosch AUTO ELECTRICS agent might be able to do a partial rebuild and check for less money. The problem is getting the damn things off the engine since access is often very tight.

Starter died on my last car td5 disco so i took it off and got new contacts fitted coast all of £25:) 2.5 yrs later it started playing up again (td5 famous for this fault amongst others) so i bought the contacts and did it myself less than £15 iirc.
