friend has leant me a steam cleaner for use on curtains, carpets, upholstery, etc...its basically a tank al la wall paper steamer with a hose with attachment that you wrap a towling glove type thing over. is this too harsh to use to clean a soft top roof, would it remove all the waterproofing or would it case a lot of damage to the material?

Personally I wouldn't do it. I'm not sure it would do any harm but I'd stick to the Autoglym Rag top cleaning/proofing system.

The steam comes out of those things at a fair pressure and is obviously scalding hot so could damage the waterproofing I would have thought.

Soft top cleaner

I gave my brother a hand to clean his soft top, we used a soft top cleaner from Auto Glymm, and it worked well. Should be available from large Halfords etc

i wouldn't.... could affect/losen the glue used to fix the soft top to the frame.
